TUS Concourse Reconfiguration?

Mon Nov 06, 2006 2:32 pm

I just went to the Tucson Airport website and downloaded the new terminal map (the one that shows the new features), and noticed that they plan on renaming the concourses. The East Concourse (Gates 20-28) will become "Concourse A" Gates A1-A9. The West Concourse (Gates 3-14) will become "Concourse B" Gates B1-B11.

Does anybody know when this will take effect?

It's part of the terminal renovations going on right now. Flyboyaz would be able to elaborate more. There are 2 unused gates near the AA gates that could be used by a new airline (FL?). The second gate would be a squeeze because AA would be crammed near WN. One gate is definately doable, two would be a stretch.

Editing a recent pic in Paint (see below), WN has gates 1-3, AA 4-5. A and B are doors where jetways could be put and I believe there were some there in the past. A jetway at A would use the tarmac currently used by Gate 4 (labeled A) and Gate 4 would use the space now labeled as 4. As you can see, the space between 3 and 4 is tight and fitting an MD-80 there could be difficult with an MD-80 at 4 and a 737 at 3. I don't know the actual distance and cannot be certain. Jetway retraction would also be limited for Gates 4 and 5 in this arrangement also. If AA were to use A and 4 or 5 and B, two gates would be available for other airlines.

The most feasible thing that could happen is a Gate at B for a new airline. The space appears to be adequate. I'm thinking that Skybus will probably serve TUS because they need somewhere to fly 65 A319's to. It would end up being a battle between them and FL for the gate. (I hope FL would win.) Because since Skybus will need a western hub, they could build a new terminal for themselves in the open space between the East Concourse and the Cargo Ramp. TUS would not contribute O/D traffic but space is available. The East Concourse could be extended to a similar length or longer than the West Concourse because of the same open space and would be a simpler arrangement than a satellite terminal in the open space. 5-8 gates could easily be added that way if there were takers.

Looks like another night, another essay for me. Hope this one was good. Comments welcome as always.

For some reason the pic is not as big when you view the full size as it should be but if you save it and then zoom in on it you will see some of my editing but it is not very clear. Sorry.

Thanks for the details. I would like to add that as part of the reconfiguration, the food service is being revamped. In the main terminal area there is a Baskin Robins Ice Cream, a food-to-go and a snack shop all together. I have read that the second floor El Charro will be replaced by a food court. In the UA/US concourse there is a new bar/deli concession. In the WN/AA area, a temporary concession has been set up.

Finally, there is a good selection of food, with all the restaurants currently undergoing renovation. For the first time in my life, you can get good coffee at the airport, similar to Starbucks, called Ike's. FYI, Frontier will use the new gate A5 (currently gate 28). Progress is very slow, as all construction projections in TUS. PHX can rebuild their airport twice in the time it will take TUS to complete this renovation project.

Well if you go to The Press Release, they go into more detail about the new food service.

The restaurants are supposed to be done around Xmas time. They were hoping for Thanksgiving but I guess they ran into some problems. It will look nice I guess...it's just really cramped. They supposed to be moving the US and NW gate podiums to back where the gate 9 and 10 doors are. That should be done today. They put a bar that is literally not even 10 feet from the counter....it's been interesting!!

I haven't heard about the renaming of concourses...don't know why they would need to really..but hey...what the heck!

Oh Nooooooo!!!!!!  Angry

El Charro was one of the few airport restaurants I've eaten at where the food was as good as anything you could get in town.

On a hot day, there was nothing better than relaxing there with a meal, and a cold Negro Modelo, and watching the action on the ramp.

Now I'll have to go outside the airport to get decent Mexican food  hissyfit

I liked their food...I'm not big on Mexican but I found it was as good as the El Charro downtown.

It's nice to have a variety of foods though...and airport employees get discounts now...we didn't before. That sucked!

The El Charro restaurant upstairs is supposed to turn into a Jet Rock Bar...or something like that...supposed to mimick a Hard Rock Cafe...maybe they've changed their plans, I dunno.

When I left Tucson (summer 2002) the terminal project was just underway. Glad to see much of it is already complete. In the old terminal the ticketing level was ok, but downstairs in baggage claim was always too cramped.

TUS was always lacking in the retail/concession department, especially on the concourses. So any change is a welcome improvement. Though I am a little bummed that El Charro will no longer be in the airport. I think it is nice to see locally owned restaraunts in places like airports. Gives you a bit of the local flavor, and it isn't like a Chili's is all that different from one town to the next.

You can't say that in front of me. I live in a Mexican food desert right now. I'd kill to be back in Tucson and be able to go to any number of Mexican places.... a carne asada burrito from Viva on Speedway would really hit the spot right about now.

LOL...sorry...I have some shipped out to you! hehe

I'm a white boy from NH so Mexican is still foreign to me...grew up on Italian...grandma wouldn't like me eating Mexican..lol.

I think it is actually...never been though.

What's funny about the new restaurants are the employees are really young for the most part. The new vendor doesn't pay well so I guess they aren't going to attract much of a "mature" crowd.

My coworker and I went to order food and my friend asked the waitress for a hamburger....the girl said..."We don't have hamburgers, just burgers." LOL After I got over the shock...I couldn't stop laughing...it was too funny. Oye....

It's still open. Great place...in a horrible neighborhood.

It's too bad the El Charros are gone. I never showed up with enough time to get food, but the times I've been delayed, the El Charro upstairs was great. Now they have that overpriced Cibo stuff.

ABQ now has the best dinner stop in the southwest. That green chili place down from security. Best green chili chicken soup...though a bit expensive.

Yes it is over priced. With our discount it's about what someone should pay! I miss the El Charro too, but they had such a strangle hold on the airport...even the airport authority couldn't wait to get rid of them. Just not enough variety. We'll see how the new places work out.

Not this time...we're getting a Taco Bron (which is nasty), that's about the only "local" food I think.

Man I'm getting hungry reading this post! Going back to TUS for Thanksgiving this year, Pat's is on the list, so is Lucky Wishbone, Pop steakfingers and two loaves of that garlic bread, Las Margaritas and Putney's, all that should hold me over until next year.

A Taco Bron? Oh jeez.

The only good thing I've had at Cibo were key lime cookies. A WN FA had them and they were quite tasty. They were also $7.

That would be the Lucky Dragon. They still have commercials. We need good Chinese food here. A lot of the food here seems to be a lot of fried MSG.

What a steal! LOL Somebody bought the same brand of cookies at Ikea for half the price. We thought we should resell them and beat the airport's price!

Haha...yeah she was funny. My friend owned the Pink Motel Video Store on Speedway...they used to mimick her in their commercials. She didn't like that too much, but thought it was funny afterwards..lol.
