Qatar Adds 7 New Cities In 2007: JFK/DPS...

Tue Nov 07, 2006 5:49 am

Qatar plans service to US

Qatar Airways has unveiled the list of new cities to be launched in 2007.

*New York
*Dar es Salaam (already announced)
*Lagos
*Denpasar
*Ho Chi Minh
*Unnamed Northern European city
*Unnamed Eastern European city - 1st for the airline

However, due to the aircraft deliveries, CEO Akbar Al Baker is cautioned about it and blames "protracted negotiations" with rival planemakers Airbus and Boeing Co. for the carrier's failure to meet its target of opening 10 new routes each year.

Qatar Airways currently serve Houston, Washington, New York, Newark as codeshare, operated by Lufthansa.

I'm still hoping AMS will fall in this category, but I guess that's stretching the term 'northern' a bit...

My guess would be JFK. As Emirates and Eitihad are there also.

In terms of international carriers going into New York JFK seems to be the more prestigious airport. Correct me if I am wrong please.

And also JFK is A380 ready .... not that it really matters in lieu of the situation at Airbus.

Quoting GayrugbyMAN (Reply 6):

Doubt it most like going to be a direct. Emirates and Eitihad offer 4 flight to mideast all except for one is direct.

As I mentioned in the other thread Qatar ordered the A340-600HGWs in order to serve routes like this (DOH-JFK).

Qatar stated that they want EWR but so did Etihad and they are now at JFK.

Wouldn't happen to be DUB would it? After EI and GF launched services from the Middle East to Dublin last year, both routes to DXB and BAH have been extremely sucessfull and with a reputation like QR's (5star) they would be bound to succeed in such an under served market.

According to Al-Sharq Qatari newspaper:

Sorry, the article is in Arabic. Basically, Qatar Airways and the Swiss civil aviation authority have amended an exisiting air treating allowing the carrier up to 14 weekly flights and additional cargo flights to any destination(s) in Switzerland.

Also, there was an agreement for flights to the USA via Switzerland. This article can be combined with other similar threads but it is worth mentioning it in a new thread.

So, can we be looking at flights to USA via Zurich maybe?

I'm pretty sure that any DOH-DPS will be served as a tag on to some other destination, most likely SIN, or alternatively KUL or CGK. QR would be the first Middle Eastern carrier into DPS, although EK have previously looked into serving DPS, but have finally decided to add 3 additional frequencies to CGK instead because of the lack of premium traffic at DPS.

It is interersting to see, though, that QR somehow has made Cebu (CEB) work out well for them. In fact, the route seems to be going so well that QR has recently started nonstop DOH-CEB operations, dropping the initial stopover in SIN. Maybe QR is looking at a repeat of the Cebu success story at Bali?

With Emirates dominating the Lagos to Middle East routes with cheap fares, daily flights, great service and easy connections to other Middle Eastern Cities, I do not know if Qatar Airways will find Lagos worthwhile.

My guess would be Copenhagen (CPH).

Copenhagen Airport have publically annonced that they are expecting to reveal a new longhaul destination within two or three weeks. We know from previous threads that US is not commencing services to CPH, nor is DL inaugurating JFK-CPH (not for 2007 anyway). So this new longhaul service is probably not to North America.

And given Qatar´s ties with Star Alliance ....

But of course Stockholm is plausible too.

Could be... haven't heard anything about EK lately, but I was confident that they were the unannounced carrier. According to EK (so could be shined up), they had 1.000 bookings a week, should be viable!... Still haven't figured out whether it was bad bookings or the Mohammed crisis that made EK withtract; with 1.000 bookings a week for 4 weekly 330s starting 6 months ahead the latter reason sounds most plausible.. but that's a different issue..

Hope to see QR, would be cool! EK always welcome too, of course.. Hey, Arlanda you can have one, we'll take the other at CPH!.. (sorry, OSL..)  Wink

And as someone already pointed out, nonstop DOH-DPS sounds strange.. KL and others pulled out of that because it was far too leisure oriented..

30 JANUARY 2006

BREAKING NEWS

BIRMINGHAM is to be linked non-stop to Doha from 26 March with Qatar Airways offering a four times per week service. Doha, capital of the Gulf area state of Qatar, is a major hub for much of the Middle East and for many destinations on the Indian subcontinent. Announcing the new route the airline’s chief executive officer Akbar Al Baker said, “All our operations covering Gatwick, Heathrow and Manchester are performing extremely well. Birmingham is a natural progression for us, the UK a major market.” He also confirmed that the Manchester flights would go from four to five from 11 February and daily at the beginning of the summer season 26 March. Airbus A330 aircraft, in a two-class configuration as used for Manchester, will also service Birmingham.

************************************

Of course this came and went and it didnt happen..
Maybe its back on ??

Would sure be nice to get QR here !

I had never been informed about that news. It s interesting though because my speculations about BHX as the new QR destination seem likely to come true.
Besides, if u go to QR's career website they include BHX as one of their stations although currently they havent started recruiting for it.
In any case, BHX has a big Asian community and as EK has launched two successful daily flights, QR cannot stay inactive.  Smile

I fully agree with this post !!

I belive that there is still quite a bit of ethnic traffc to be captured from the BHX regions...
No doubt BHX will never be a MAJOR competitor to MAN or LHR as it is sandwiched right inbetween them both,
but I do believe that if airlines such as EK, QR, AI can keep fares competitive from BHX then I think BHX could in fact pursuade people to not drive further than needed to either MAN or LHR..

Quick question, maybe HB-IWC might be able to answer this: what aircraft is being used for the daily CEB flights? What would the flight time be like on a normal DOH-CEB-DOH run? I know that Manila is served by an A330 and usually hovers around the 8 hour mark. I can't imagine being stuck on their old A300s for anywhere near that time, but then again I can't imagine QR sending their A330s to CEB either.

Duration for DOH-CEB is 9h 15m non-stop.
Duration for CEB-DOH is 10h 35m non-stop.

RE: Qatar Adds 7 New Cities In 2007: JFK/DPS...

Thanks for the quick reply Rob! One more question: Are there any differences regarding the IFE and updated interiors between the A330-200 and A330-300 in QR's fleet? MNL seems to be an impressive market for QR!

A sidenote - how is KTM doing as a market for QR; last I heard, they were going to axe the KUL continuation on their KTM flights. KTM is served by A320s tright?

The IFE is exactly the same in all the planes with A332 and A333 except maybe that some A332 lack the Live TV program, although last I heard that they are updating their systems fast.
