Where Will Cathay Pacific's B773ERs Go?

Tue Nov 07, 2006 8:30 am

I'm not sure if it's discussed before. But still would like to open this topic for discussion.

In last December Cathay placed an order to purchase 16 B777-300ER and 3 A330-300. And in last June it also add two more B777-300ER to the book. My questions are:

Where are they gonna put these B773ER?

Will these B773ER replace the current A343s and B744?

I've heard of a rumour that they will be used to operate regional routes but I'm in doubt as these aircraft are definitely designed for long-haul routes.

JFK will be among the first-wave destination to get 77W.

77W will be part of the long-haul replacement+expansion so no, they'll not be flying exclusively regional route unless Hong Kong's climate goes Dubai style.

The first route will be HKG-JFK non stop. The second route will also be HKG-JFK non-stop. The third route will be HKG-YYZ non-stop. After that will likely be to LAX.

The A340-600s will be leaving at the end of next year apparently.

Perhaps upgrade some of the A343/333 routes or fly multiple frequencies where the 744 is done only one daily.
Assuming the 773ER is going to be three-cabin plane HKG to SYD/MEL are possbilities.
CX could look at flying four daily to LAX with two westbound daytime flights instead of the current one.
HKG-SFO from one daily to two daily with one of each daytime and night time westbound flights.
Upgrade the two westbound daytime HKG-LHR flights.
Just to name some possibilities.

With LAX having three daily flights, perhaps one of the three will be swapped with a 77W.
Has anyone heard if LAX will go all 77W? If so, maybe they will add an additional daylight flight as mentioned by Carpethead.

I'm guessing HKG-YVR-JFK will be dropped in favor for a second daily HKG-JFK? Which would mean only two daily flights.

There are zero plans for the 777s to go to Australia at all. The company like the A330s there and have no plans to change....having said that, plans change all the time.

There has been no rumour about this, however Cathay makes good money between YVR-JFK so I don't think they would be looking to drop this. Change back to a smaller aircraft like a 343 maybe.

I would also presume that they will be used on the JNB route as i saw that they are flying the 744 to JNB again.

AKL at some stage will see the 77W's, on another board someone mentioned that AKL would be after JFK though I don't no that it will be that soon.

Any idea on the number of seats these aircraft will have? I've heard that they will be a mixture of 2 and 3 class.

The 343s will stay for the time being as far as I know, although there are a few leased ones which may be returned fairly initially. I do not know though and nothing has been announced about this.

AKL will eventually be a 77W destination, although initially it will be those places where the extra legs of the 77W are needed, i.e. JFK, YYZ, LAX and JNB.

It would be great to see CX 773ERs (and CX passenger service in general) at ORD... but I still see AA launching the route, not CX. Remember, AA wants to grow their Asian presence at ORD beyond NRT, DEL, and PVG with their own fleet and not necessarily the birds of oneworld partners.

It will be great to se the interiors with the new seating in First, Business and Coach. LAX & SFO will probably remain 744, the capacity demands it and they can't fly nonstop to JFK or YYZ from HKG.

CX 346 are leased from ILCF, 4 in all?

My guess is either VS/SAA/LH might buy them for a good price.

IIRC they have three and are all leased indeed. Not sure when that expires though.

I'm guessing AMS is not premium enough to warrant the 77W? The 2-class a343 is probably best for the HKG-AMS route. I guess there's a reason KL has no first class. I'm eager to try CX out in march!!

I wonder if Cathay will consider Houston IAH as a next destination? IAH has seen a bunch of growth from Asia recently...Pakistani, China Airlines, Emirates, and now looking to have a Korean Air Cargo operation.

Just food for thought!

They'd pretty much open DFW before IAH where DFW is oneWorld hub.

DFW has been on CX's radar for a while

Of course, AA and CX could both do ORD-HKG if they so choose. However, as AA and CX are both oneworld partners with codesharing agreements, I think that it will be one or the other.

Also, keep in mind that Oasis Hong Kong is planning on starting ORD-HKG in 2007. It would be a great thing to see four carriers instead of just UA serving ORD-HKG. But, then again, I'm sure there would also be overcapacity if UA, AA, CX, and Oasis all serve ORD-HKG.

Likely the desert. The CX A340-600s are the worst A340-600s around. (being the first off the line) Airbus built them with abnormally heavy wings, making them more costly to operate than normal A340-600s, which are already not so efficient.
