Tue Nov 07, 2006 9:01 am

BA is in negotiations with the Angola government to increase its weekly flight to Luanda from once a week to thrice weekly. Rob Cooper BA officer in Luanda has demonstrated that the Angola market has a huge potential for growth. BA is commemorating the 4th birthday of the London to Luanda route this November. since the route has been opened the airline has carry over 70,000 passengers, said the officer.

Diamonds and oil not withstanding, isn't it interesting that in 2006 Luanda is a more viable destination than Melbourne, Auckland or Brisbane!

Maybe a code-share with TAAG may help BA get those additional frequencies.

For European airlines, African routes are a lot more viable than most other routes.

ET just started the 3rd flight a week to Luanda using the Star 330. The 330 carries 365 Pax and is always 100% full.

Just about every airline with service into LAD is likely to agree to an immediate increase of service there, if given half the chance. I wish BA good look in their venture, and I'm guessing they are asking for thrice weekly services in hopes to eventually settle for twice weekly. If they succeed, which is al but certain given the Angola Government's traditionally very restrictive policies in this domain, I'd expect Air France and SN Brussels to line up for extra service as well.

The trip time for an aircraft to Luanda is somewhat less than 24 hours, going to Australia or New Zealand the trip time is nearer 60 hours. However the fares are remarkably similar giving a much higher profit margin on the Luanda run.
