Smallest Airliners With IFE

Tue Nov 07, 2006 10:42 am

Does anyone know what are the smallest airliners with IFE? The ones I can think of are Air Cananda's CRJ-705s and Embraer 175s, but are there smaller aircraft with IFE?

IFE is becoming more and more popular on smaller aircraft. Traditionally IFE was mostly restricted to widebody aircraft. The 757 was the first narrowbody aircraft to widely feature IFE, especially video. Most narrowbody aircraft before the 757 were not equipped with IFE, or were audio-only. In fact, the only 757s I know of that were not equipped with IFE were Eastern's. IFE then started to appear on smaller aircraft, such as the Airbus A320 series, 737NG, MD-90s, and some 737 classics.

IIRC seeing a photo of an American or TWA 707 with small 4" CRT monitors used for IFE.

IIRC, some US 733's had a video system.

Didn't Legend Airlines have a few 56 seat DC-9s with PTVs at each seat?

Kingfisher's (IT) ATRs are supposed to be the first with IFE on them - not sure if their ATRs (42/72) are bigger or smaller than the other a/c mentioned on this thread.

Looks like Vyborg does not offer personal programming on PTV or is it a coincidence that everyone is watching the same channel?

all QF 734's have CRT moniters as did their 733's. I can also remember flying on an AN 733 with CRT moniters around 1995 and their 727's had audio channels around that time too.

UA's 727-200s had audio back in the mid 1990s. Canadian Airlines had 737-200s equiped with audio and monitors mounted in the ceiling. I remember watching short subjects between YHZ and YYZ back in the late 1990s.

Swanberg Air of Grande Prairie sometimes subbed their J31's for a Challenger on their 3x weekly flights into YVR, which had PTV's on each seat. (The service has been suspended a couple of weeks back - one flight with the Challenger had one passenger, with his own F/A, leather seats, PTV's - shame they stopped before i got to have a shot at that...).

Some of the 733s/734s I think from US has or had IFE. I flew on a 733 i think it was with TV monitors, though I can't remember them being switched on. Been a few years ago, can anyone clear up the US 737 situation?

How do people hear well on these turboprops with IFE?

The Vyborg Il-114 looks really nice, both the aircraft itself and the interior.

A viable competitor to the Q400 and ATR72?

I don't reckon its coincidence... In the first row, there's only one TV screen per two seats.

JAT's 733's, the first of thetype delivered in Europe in 1985, are eqipped with center-aisle TV monitors (BETAMax System) as well as Audio entertainment.

Dash 8's on Airlines PNG have screens in the cabin showing DVD's and wireless headsets. There are no PVT's.

US does indeed have audio and video on portions of the 737 fleet, more specifically, the former LR versions that flew out West and to the Caribbean before the 757's and Airbus arrived.

Many of the monitors have been removed, but every now and then I'll get on a a 737 with video. They still use them for the safety demo (in Spanish too) and probably now play the trivia. I do not believe that music was loaded back onto the 737 fleet after it was removed fleetwide in a stupid cost cutting move in 2002.

It depends upon your definition of airliners and IFE. There was an article I believe in Airways a few months ago about a guy who flew a twin sea plane for his airline called Amigo Airways from the Canada mainland, I think Vancouver to Vancouver Island and other areas. He had a puul down DVD player for his passengers to watch on the short hop. I think he could only hold about 12 passengers or less than that.

I think 10 of Continental's 733s have a video system. I think. The rest of the fleet does, except for their 735s and remaining 733s.

Smallest I know of is the ATR -500 series (see their website www.atr.com) - pretty cool to have IFE on a turboprop!
