Flights Grounded At JNB Due To Fuel Leak

Tue Nov 07, 2006 3:04 pm

News reports from South Africa state that there was a fuel leak at JNB this morning, and as a result some flights have been grounded. There was a telephone interview with an ACSA spokesperson, but I couldn't understand a word of it -- spokesperson mumbled into the phone.

Anyone have any further information?

An update I've just heard on the radio says that "a river of fuel and water is streaming out of a drainage pipe behind the airport" (take with a pinch of salt) and is threatening to pollute a local dam.

Here is a news report from a local radio station:

O.R Tambo fuel leak reaching dam 07/11/2006 11:33:58
Emergency Services are trying to prevent jet fuel from spilling in the Blaupandam on the East Rand.

This follows a leak at O.R Tambo International this morning.

A river of petrol and water is streaming out of drainage pipes at the back wall of the airport.

Bulldozers and lorries have been brought in as part of an operation to try and prevent the fuel from flowing into the dam.

Today's reports are claiming 1.3 MILLION litres of fuel spilled into local dams -- the local ecosystem has largely been destroyed.

Airports Company of South Africa (who manage JNB) are being absolutely slammed by the media in South Africa for basically ignoring the spill, and not doing anything to address the spill.

Yes it's 1.3mill. Yes - to the S and E of the airport - extending about 5-8 km (depending on wind) the air stinks. Nausea is getting to most of us - the humans need a decent rain storm to lessen it but that then scews up the ecosystem even worse than it is already - what a no win situation.

If you look at JNB via Google Earth you'll clearly see the string of small 'pans' that are all now totally stuffed by this leak - and there are a number of rare/endangered species that USED to visit. The September spill took care of the young birds, this one the adults!

I work 30km from home in JNB central and 3 hours after leaving home still have the taste of JP1 in my mouth!

ACSA are just so quiet - pathetic bunch - we (residents) are having great fun who to take on for this! Even the Dept of Environment is suing them for this one.

Media slamming them - wait 'til the residents are done with them!

It sounds like they need a good klap! My parents live 5 min from the airport, but on the Pretoria highway, so I'm hoping they're relatively unaffected. There was a lot of talk this morning about the fact that ACSA is pretty much a monopoly, so there's no real incentive for them to get their butts into gear and clean this up. I was surprised to hear that this is the third major fuel leak in two years ... something needs to be done, and QUICKLY!

I grew up around those pans ... so I'm really not very happy about this ...

ACSA would like to expand the airport. Would this a one way to get the land? Destroy it and then take it over?

Recent radio report:

Fuel spill causing health problems 10/11/2006 08:49:40
More East Rand residents say their health has been affected by the massive fuel spill at OR Tambo International earlier this week.

Over 1.3 million liters of jet fuel leaked into the Blaauwpandam and environmentalists now say it has spread into several other dams in the area.

A woman who lives several kilometers from Blaauwpan says every night since the spill the stench has been overwhelming.

Several other residents are complaining of similar symptoms and some are now being forced to evacuate their homes and businesses.

@ Bren

Well Pomona and Bredell have that lovely smell and people who rely on borehole water in that area have been asked to contact the local council!

@A390

Ah yes - the conspiracy theory.

Blow 1.3m/l of JP1 right through the middle of the housing area that ACSA want to buy to build new runways etc... and then let it run into protected wetlands so that the bunny & tree huggers have no wetlands to protest about. This is getting around a bit and just smells a bit too close to the truth. Especially when ACSA make statements like

1. Water / Air contamination is within acceptable limits
2. They have recovered 400 (!) litres so far
3. No one has yet been declared accountable for the 'spill'

Well Pomona and Bredell

My dad hasn't said anything to me -- but they live fairly close to Pomona (it's a couple of minutes down the road towards the R21 from my parents' house) ... I hope ACSA is going to have hell to pay.
