JFK VS EWR. Which airport is busier? I mean in terms of the number of passengers/flights.

If you tried Google, you'd get this answer....

JFK has fewer flights but bigger planes than Newark. I thought the two would cancel out and they'd be nearly equal. But JFK wins by a fair bit, to my surprise. I guess EWR gets a lot of 'lawn darts' while JFK gets the A340s, the 747s, etc. EWR gets those, too, but not enough to make it close.

IMO JFK is the busiest as it handles more airlines than EWR.
Most of int'l carriers send their birds of JFK rather than Newark or even IAD USA's capital airport...
JFK is along with LHR, CDG and FRA one of these places where carriers must
to fly to...

Cheers,

It's not a matter of opinion. Both are "busier" than the other. JFK has more revenue passengers, EWR has more aircraft movements.

Here's the numbers:
--
Y/E 2005 total revenue passengers:
JFK: 40,884,350
EWR: 33,037,756

YTD 2006 (through Aug-06) total revenue passengers:
JFK: 28,382,177
EWR: 24,292,581
--
Y/E 2005 total flights, including general aviation:
JFK: 349,519
EWR: 435,874

YTD 2006 (through Aug-06) total flights, including general aviation:
JFK: 239,082
EWR: 297,469

Tjwgrr pointed out some statistics comparing the 2 airports. Another taken from the PANYNJ website is the 12 months ending August 2006:

JFK: 41 22/100 million passengers and 355,528 aircraft movements
EWR: 35 37/100 million passengers and 443,180 aircraft movements.

Comparing to the 2005 12-month totals this suggests the difference in passengers between the 2 airports is shrinking from about 8 million to 6 million, while the difference in total flights is rather static.

It was not too long ago that EWR led all the New York City airports in both passengers and movements but JetBlue at JFK made all the difference.

How does jetBlue's contribution to JFK movements and passenger traffic compare to that of TWA?

Out of approx. 3900 JFK arrivals in the last 7 days, 938 were Jetblue....so around 24%!

EWR had around 4400 arrivals in the same period.

Matches fairly well with other stats posted above (remember to double my numbers for total movements).

In terms of buisiness, EWR because of their runway situation and gate problems. In terms of customers, JFK is the bigger.

They are both insanely busy during peak hours...Throw in a summer thunderstorm or a winter snowstorm and things get hairy.

Yeah, although LGA is the busiest NYC airport in terms of flights.

There are plenty busier airports than the NY airports. None of them are even in the top ten for the USA, in terms of movements.

No it's not. Click on the link in the first reply and check the stats. YTD as of August 06, LGA was second with about 31,000 fewer movements than EWR.

Edit: Unless of course you mean only New York City itself. LGA is busier, in terms of flights, than JFK. But, if you mean all three NYC airports, LGA is number 2.

Well, depends on the dates, and I failed to explain mine.

this month to date, LGA has more movements ...not much, somewhere like average 1100/day vs 1000 ....not much I admit.

For seven consecutive years EWR handled more passengers and flights than JFK or LGA, JFK took back the title of handling the most passengers in 2002.

Same in the 1980s, during the 1980s EWR was busier in terms of passengers and flights than JFK thanks to the success of PeoplExpress.

EWR and JFK have gone back and forth several times as NYC's busiest airport in terms of passengers handled, also keep in mind EWR is NYC's first airport opening in 1928 before LGA or Idlewild/JFK.

EWR is the hub for CO, while JFK has B6 which is a major carrier, B6 does not have as many flights as CO's domestic and international combined. I would love to say JFK is busier as thats my hometown airport.. but I gotta say its EWR.
