Based on the capacities I'm guessing a 735 and an A319?

Found this in another article from ABC 7 Chicago:

"United Flight 672, a Boeing 737, was headed to New York's LaGuardia Airport with 110 passengers on board and United Flight 732, an Airbus 320, was headed to Dulles International Airport in Virginia carrying 96 passengers."

Visibility is still bad in some parts. Did you see any of the fog bowl on ESPN2 between Northern Illinois and Toledo? While driving home from the northern suburbs, the fog was getting thicker as I was heading out towards the edges of Kane and Cook counties.

It happens ALL THE TIME. It's just a slow news day now that the elections are over.

At least it was not in the air!!!! Visibility and ground taxi is a mother of all evils. It has to be difficult to manuever an aircraft on the ground with low visibility. I have a hard enough time driving in fog in my 4 door car. I could not imagine trying to taxi an aircraft that is about 400 times the size of my car.

One was on the ground (Pan Am) and one was in the air (KLM). TOTALLY different situation and not even in the realm of reasonability to compare the two, IMHO...

Now that is splitting hairs....!! OK, the KLM jet was attempting to take off and never really got airborne.

Exactly. In the air? Hardly...

Indeed, and the KLM jet still rotated too early in an attempt to miss the Pan Am.

Hey, just trying to taxi a piper can by trying enough in a small airport, an A320 or much less a widebody has to be a uniquely trying experience.

The KLM 747 was actually airborne when it struck the PanAm 747.

The KLM almost made it too..... he had just taken on extra fuel, had he not, he might have been able to clear the panam.

It scrapped its empennage just trying to rotate, so in essence it was damaged before it hit Pan Am. Believe what you want, the jet never got 100ft off the ground. The NTSB report sites the crash a collison on a runway, last time I checked runways were on the ground.
