PTV's On BA's LGW/LHR 777 Fleet

Wed Nov 08, 2006 2:53 am

Hi All

Just wanted to know wether the screen size of the PTV is smaller on the triple 7's in Club World compared to the 747 fleet, and also is the PTV's different to the LHR fleet than the LGW fleet?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think they are both the same size.

There is a mixture of Rockwell Collins and Marconi IFE on the 777.

I do not know the screen sizes, but IIRC the Marconi system (I think on GE powered 777's) has a much smaller screen.

Am I right in thinking the LGW 777s are the older ones, with the smaller PTVs?

Or have they all been updated?

Not sure about LGW, but I travelled to AUH recently in F and we had the small style PTV's. (about2.5")

Unfortunately not. I decided to watch a movie from the Library... which to my surprise came out on a portable DVD player!! (Rather than the DV tape that usually goes in the seat!)

There is a mix of Rockwell and Marconi at LGW, LHR is all Rockwell. Although this will no dobut be changed to all Rockwell when the LGW 777's go in for their IFE refits to AVOD.

Not for sure. That post above with the Marconi was on an ex-LHR flight. It is the luck of the draw with the 777s.

According to a BA insider on Flyertalk apparently the GMIS system will not be upgraded. Only 25 of the 43 777s are getting an AVOD upgrade, so you'll end up with AVOD or a substandard 12 channel system  thumbsdown

Hmmm, sounds odd. Since they habe both GE and RR power aircrafts with the old IFE, it'd make scence to atleast one whole fleet, doesn't add up...

The 3 LGW based ex-AML 777s have a non standard and non uprgradeable 12 channel Rockwell Collins system with Rockwell size screens.

The 3 ex AML aircraft have all been upgraded. When they had the Dusk mod, they also got the Rockwell TES system. 18 channels of movies and games in Club World and WT+.

There is not a "non-upgradeable" Rockwell Collins IFE system.

There are now 4 LGW based 777's with 3 classes, flying the routes that the AML aircraft used to fly. G-VIIO,P,R,T.

AML stood for Airline Management Limited

It was basically a "paper" airline that operated certain flights on behalf of BA, they had BA flight crew, Flying Colours (then JMC) cabin crew, and the aircraft tech log was in the name of AML.

This lasted for a few years in the late 1990's Ceased operations in Nov 1998

Aha, yes! Weren't they the ones that operated 777s in 3-4-3 config?

Had them crammed in down the back. Rod Eddington made a point of bringing those routes back "in house" and making the config the same as standard 777's

I only ever flew them in Club, and only once since having the flat beds fitted.

Rockwell screens definitely larger than the GMIS ones.

No! More like 6''! Which isn't a lot for a PVT, but I guess it depends how you use it...  flamed

That's because it is (by an inch or 2). What i meant, was that there was no difference in size between LHR Rockwell screens, and the LGW Rockwell screens.

Wasn't it flying colours, then it became JMC, and they were then taken over by someone else ?

They flew (at some point) to
KIN
TAB
TPA
SJU
MBJ
CUN
SJO
Havana
Puerto Plata (Dominican Republic)

Hope that answers your question  Smile

Here's some other info: when BA stopped using Airline Management Limeted (AML) they operated 3 BA 777's (G-VIIO, G-VIIP and G-VIIR) in a 2 class 28J/355M configuration from LGW.
Before that, they operated 1 (later 3) BA DC-10's (G-BHDH,G-BHDI and G-NIUK) in a 32J/279M layout from LGW between March 1997/8 and March 1999
