Emirates, First To Allow Use Of Mobile Phones!

Wed Nov 08, 2006 5:10 pm

Quote:
Emirates in-flight mobile calls

Emirates will become the first airline allowing mobile phone calls to be made during flights, through technology from Aeromobile, the airline said in statement. The service is expected to start on one of Emirates' Boeing 777 planes in January 2007. Call charges will be "comparable to international tariffs", according to the airline. Cabin crew will be able to switch the system into text only mode at night, to reduce disturbance.

Great news!

I seem to remember hearing that FR were planning a similar service. Seems like a good idea, I wish there were more airlines offering internet access in flight.

Was watching BBC this morning, apparently the cost will be about $2 per minute to make a call. I certainly hope they introduce QUIET zones on aircraft as I don;t fancy trying to have a snooze and being awoken by someones ring tone!

The only thin that really annoys me about this is that now they are allowing mobile phones (which of course emit a significant amount of electromagnetic waves), but I still am not allowed to use my digital camera during takeoff and landing (which of course doesn't tansmit anything). WHY? I want to take pictures!

Little bit weird to me, Emirates have a telephone set on every seat in their fleet. How-come they will allow others to use mobiles? and what network can cover the space? are they going to withdraw the telephone from their fleet?

Did it say anything about people ringing you? By the sound of it, it would be cheaper to recieve calls.

Great, there's an airline I wouldn't want to fly again... just imagine a 14 hours DXB-SYD flight with mobiles going off every few minutes  crazy

Eek! I'm already going crazy on the 1h train-travel from Bern to Zurich about all those veeeery important cellphone calls (Honey, I'll be home at 5.30pm, blablabla) every few seconds. Not to mention all those loud and annoying ringtones!
I agree, that nowadays business-needs are going in this direction, but it is really necessary to be connected to the world every f... second? They should use the in-seat phone, thats what it is for, for gods sake!

I wanna have cellphone-free and baby-free zones on airplanes  duck   Smile

Yes it did. The BBC article said you will be able to recieve and make calls.

Receiving calls was about 70 cents per minute.

I guess this helps a little bit but still worries me that when you get a few people on phones next to each other the will keep trying to overtalk the other person or Especially the ones who automatically yelling when there on the phone (and don't realize it).I like the feeling of not being "connected to the world (And flying) it is relaxing but now it seems this is in jeopardy. just my  twocents

Same here. I thought DL was going to start when they upgraded the PTV systems. How fast is EK internet? Does it cost you anything?

Don't like it ? I would go a bit further, the very thought of sitting next to some boring idiot for 10 hours or so, who is repeatedly making pointless calls to inflate his own importance fills me with dread. At least in most situations you can move away, but on a plane no chance.

You would think that business people with hectic lives would welcome the chance to escape from continous phone calls; but no they seem to welcolme the disturbance.

Most of us business travelers do. Flights are a welcome respite from constant accessibility. I think you will find that business travelers are typically not the ones constantly chattering on their cellphones. Granted, I use mine a lot, but I do try to step away from people since I don't want to be rude. On a plane, I think text messaging would be more my thing.

As a previous poster stated, a cell phone free zone, like on many trains, would be a good thing.

I totally agree with you. My job requires me to be reachable almost 24h a day. Those few hours wher I fly or transit through an airport are great for me. I feel relaxed because I can keep my mobile phone switched of (that's why I choose always to take connections and no direct flights  Smile)... So I will be avoiding Emirates from now own (I have never travelled with them, always choosing BA).
Next flights : BRU-ZRH-CAI (LX)/ BRU-FCO-TLV (AZ)

Basically I oppose the use of cellphones aboard. Period.

But maybe airlines could have separate sections in the cabin - a cellhpone section and a quiet section. After all, we used to have smoking and nonsmoking sections also.

I don´t know about most of you, but I wouldn´t be making long pointless calls at $2/min. I don't think it will be a problem at this cost. At 30 cents a minute, maybe. The solution is to keep phone service relatively unaffordable for general public.

I see air rage incidents increasing exponentially with the introduction of this 'service'. Sitting next to some loud and boring git's cellphone calls for 14 hours to SYD or JFK will certainly impact my choice of airline. On the other hand though, if I was one of the loud and boring gits, I might just want to travel more on EK....

It's so that Tim Clark can always stay in contact with Boeing and Airbus, even when 30000ft in the air  Wink
