OneWorld At JFK And AA's New Terminal

Thu Nov 09, 2006 4:22 am

Can we expect any of AA's Oneworld partners to move in the new JFK terminal (8&9) once it is completed?

A little improvement in layout and JFK could get a little better at OneWorld->AA and SkyTeam->DL connections.

As I understand it LHR is planning to separate airline terminals by alliance once T5 is complete. Shouldn't JFK try to do something similar (with AA/OneWorld in the short term and SkyTeam in the future if DL ever gets around to a renovation)?

Probably not, beyond maybe MALEV and a few others.

The big heavy-hitters at JFK, though, including BA, LAN and Iberia, are not going anywhere. They all have space in respective terminals, including BA with semi-control of T7, and none want to give that up to share with AA. In addition, there was a dispute going back to the new terminal's initial announcement in 1999 between BA and AA. BA wanted its own gates, its own facilities, own lounge, etc., and AA balked.

Another reason you likely won't see too many airlines colocating with AA in the new T8 is that even though the facilities are beautiful, AA is not a good ground handling vendor. They're known for not fulfilling contractual obligations and committing the resources to their customers that they promise, and many airlines have left AA's terminal because of it.

The new T8 doesn't really need any layout improvement to make it an alliance-friendly terminal. The new terminal, even in shrunken-down form, is still going to have plenty of space for AA's oneworld alliance partners, and if the final concourse of the new terminal ends up being built on the site of existing T8, there will be tons of open space for other airlines.

Long-term, it's not really practical because of the respecitive positions of some of the airport's largest carriers. AA controls T8/T9, and isn't going anywhere. Ditto for JetBlue in the new T5/T6 complex, and of course Delta in their ailing T2/T3 WorldPort. Further, a multi-alliance consortium (including, IIRC, Lufthansa, Air France and Korean Air) controls T1 and they all have ownership stakes in the terminal and thus aren't leaving.

BA own T7... they lease space to UA, CX, QF & others.

Perhaps Cathay, but I wouldn't expect anyone else to move in there.

United controls half of T7...
