Sofia - Rollout

Thu Nov 09, 2006 6:19 am

Thought this might be of some interest for you. Its already 6 weeks ago, strange nobody has picked it up yet. Finally, after so many years, this 747SP ist ready for service, freshly painted in the (extremely boring) NASA-livery.

That's great! I actually was expecting this to be news of that SOF was finally opening their new terminal, which appears complete but just sits idle why passengers use busses to/from the aircraft.

Good deal, indeed.

IIRC, there was some speculation that the SOFIA program would be canceled in 2005-2006 due to budget constraints and lingering technical problems.

I do agree that NASA paint jobs are extremely boring, and it wouldn't hurt them to hire a graphics artist once in a decade to keep things contemporary. God knows they could get enough ideas from the public...

Quoting NA (Thread starter):

I think I saw a thread about this (or it might be the report) about a week ago. But great that the SOFIA project lives, and the 747SP has another valuable role for contributing to science instead of being scrapped.
