Delta/KLM Expands Codeshare Deal

Sat Nov 11, 2006 1:57 am

Delta announced today (10NOV06 that it'll offer additional 14 cities in Europe as codeshare using KLM plane effective 01DEC06.

These cities are:
Bremen
Aberdeen
Luxembourg
Riga
Bergen
Stavanger
Newcastle

All flight connections are within 5 hours from a DL AMS-bound flight.

KLM, since 29OCT06, has enjoyed access to additional 29 cities through Delta's codeshare via JFK and Atlanta. The 28 new cities are within US, plus 1 to Santiago de Chile, complementing service via Paris operated by AF.

16 of 28 cities are brand new to KLM.

I guess we should see JFK-AMS by next summer.

Is this really a big deal when code-shares are announced within an airline alliance? I mean, right now can't someone fly AMS-ATL-SCL without it being specifically a KL codeshare or say CDG-EWR-HNL on AF/CO? Or is it because, some customers will only fly flight numbers with their airline? But, they are informed it's operated by a partner, right...

I guess what I'm asking is, doesn't joining an alliance give your customers access to everyone else's flights in that alliance? Why the need for a specific code-share?

I found that typically it's easier to book airline A flights if an airline A is codesharing on airline B flights.

It's easier to see the same airline code appears from a via b to c.

otherwise finding KL flight from a to b then check DL flight from b to c can be a hassle and troublesome eventhough they're in the same alliance and under alliance availability look up.

Oops. I looked for the flight and somehow missed it.

I was in AMS in May and it's getting really crowded compared to a few years ago. Hope they can avoid the crowds and delays of other overstuffed airports.

The press release cited states 14 new codeshare flights...not cities.

Makes sense.

Another question on code-sharing: Does DL get the same revenue from a customer flying DL metal from ATL-CDG versus on a DL code-share on AF metal?

No (AFAIK). In case of a DL ticket for a code-shared flight operated by AF, DL earns just a small portion of the ticket price (the majority goes to AF to pay for fuel, F/A, pilots, food, taxes, etc, which sounds logical).
