Icelandair 747-100?

Sat Nov 11, 2006 5:03 am

I recently came across a pic of a FI 747-100. I don't ever remember them flying one. Did it do the U.S.-LUX trade or was it a full time charter aircraft or what?

Thanks
Andrew

Hey Andrew,

I've searched through my Jet Airliner Production List, and here's what I've found according to this book:

FI leased B747-143 N356AS 19730/56 ex. I-DEME twice.

First time the aircraft was sub-leased from SK (which leased it from Boeing) 04-21/09/1982, and it was sub-leased during the same time frame to AH.
For the second time, the aircraft was leased from Boeing Equipment Holding Corp. July-October 2nd, 1984. But again, it was sub-leased to PK during that time frame. So I guess FI just acted as a sub-contrator, in that case most probably for Hadj flights.

In another book, I can see N356AS in what may be called full Icelandair colors, with a blue cheatline running allong the fuselage at window level, with large blake Icelandair titles, and the usual blue FI logo on the tail.
Here it is with partial AZ / SK & SK colors.

Of course this aircraft went on to serve with PeoplExpress as N606PE and then as N17011 of Continental.
