Why Are DAS Air Cargo Allowed To Fly?

Sun Nov 12, 2006 1:19 am

Acording to European Commision Website's airline-ban list DAS Air Cargo are not allowed to fly. And yet, there are recent photos in the database of their aircraft in European countries:

Netherlands (in the EU):

I read that they can only operate into the European Union if they wet lease equipment from a country or operator which complies with International safety standards.

They are a danger. Friend of mine was seconded to fly with them as flight mechanic / flight loadmaster on the 707s under contract, he did one rotation to Africa and walked away. He said the planes were so overloaded and anaemic that to get airborne, the captain would push forward and pull back (and repeat) to get the nosewheel to "bounce", to start the rotation process. They had a big electrical failure en route Nairobi-Cairo, if I recall. And small stuff like reverse brackets not "locking off" after landing, my buddy would have to go around the aircraft and manually push them back into the closed position during ground stops. No regard for the life and limb of their flight crew or those under the flight path. No reason to think things have improved with the DC10.
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz

This is a surprise to me. I took a picture of this one gliding into LOS from Amsterdam on September 20th 2006.

Big version: Width: 1024 Height: 682 File size: 638kb

It is a shame that they have let the pursuit of profits to cause them to cut corners. I have always wondered why they choose Entebbe, Uganda as their operational hub in Africa instead of their main sources of revenues - Lagos, Nairobi, Johannesburg, Luanda etc.  eyepopping

That photo was taken on the 14th October.
They were banned from the 16th of October according to the press statement listed on their website.
It also currently updates us that they are "in discussions" with the commision about improving maintenance.

No, that wasn't DAS Air Cargo. It was a former DC-10 of that airline (5X-JCR), but now flying for Arrow Cargo as N450ML. It's a very recent addition to Big A fleet. Here it is.

One DAS Cargo DC10 was seen in Garuda Maintenance in Jakarta last Sunday...

They do get it maintained... but only when they're forced to do it...

the owner is from Uganda. The ops office and management is actually near LGW.

I guess it goes to show just how hard it is for developing countries to trade on their own terms with their Western counterparts. Rather than be beholden to Western carriers charging the earth for freight, they are desperate to make it work for themselves. Perhaps sometimes, as you mention, too desperate.

There is a big part of me that admires the spirit of enterprise of DAS Air and such like but it is always measured by the need of safety for everyone concerned.

I don't know if it's anything as noble as that. I would put it down to pure greed. They had two accidents with 707s, both fatal. (And wrote off a DC10, crew rescued thank god.)
