BOM-JFK And All In Between 1971

Sun Nov 12, 2006 2:48 am

Hey all, I have some questions on the following journey.

In July 1971 my dad traveled the following route:

BOM-BEY on a BOAC VC-10
BEY-ROM on Alitala
ROM-Paris on JAL
Paris to LHR on BEA
LHR to JFK on Air India 747

Now the questions are, what type of aircraft were used by Alitalia and JAL, he says they were both jets. As for BEA, my dad thinks it was a DC-3 as he says it was a prop and he entered from the back and had to walk up an angle so that makes sense but anyone know what color scheme they would have used back then and it was possible to travel on that airline at the time?

Thanks for all your help!

BEY-ROM (FCO) was probably a DC-8-43
Some see lines, others see between the lines.

Thanks! Do you think it would have been in the 70s colors or the older colors?

Quoting Sammyk (Thread starter):

LHR to JFK on Air India 747

Paris to London would have been probably the most prestigious route for BEA in 1971 - I doubt very much that even if they still had DC3s in service at that time that they would have been on such a major route . Did they have Vickers Viscounts or Vanguards at that time ?

He had said it was a small plane and had a bunch of school children on it. Did Viscounts or Vanguards typically load from the back? Oh and he said it was only a few steps up.
