WSJ: Iraqi Airways To Acquire 5×737-400

Mon Nov 13, 2006 7:59 am

Brief fair use excerpt from The Wall Street Journal:

Quote:
BAGHDAD (AP)--National carrier Iraqi Airways announced Sunday it wanted to buy at least five Boeing 737-400 passenger jets in what appeared to be a step to facilitate increasing traffic to and from Iraq.

An English-language statement posted in the pro-government daily Al-Sabah read that "companies authorized to sell such aircraft are invited to submit their tenders" by Dec. 4.

They could be very good for the airline. What happened with that 767-200, by the way?

Going for the 734 makes sense, their pilots are all-Boeing to my knowlege. Currently, they only seem to operate three 732 and one 762. The big question is: Are Iraqi airports save, or do they always risk being shot down?

Still in the fleet, afaik. Seems to be doing VIP flights.

They still don't publish schedules though. Are they operating anything other than charters ?

Considering the current situation in Iraq, that is not surprising. Just have in mind that the airport road to SDA is one of the most dangerous roads in the world, so it is quite an achivement to have any service at all.

AirBerlin has 5 734 which it wants to get rid of during the next 1-2 years. Might be a good chance.

The Iraqi government still recognises this order, but also showed interest to convert it to A330s

Austrian company Jet Alliances did the VIP flights for the Iraqi government for quite some time with a MD-82.

I wonder if it will be a similar situation to Ariana Afghan, which received A300B4's from Air India and 727-200's from Boeing/AA, only to be then banned from the EU (for publicly unstated reasons)?

727's banned from EU due to noise restrictions, probably no hush kits!

Ariana is totally banned, without exception (according to the EU website), so I don't think it has to do with hushkits neccesarily. It likely has to do with security, or maintenance, but no reason is given.

They have only one B767. The aircraft was deregistrated from 9L-LFF
to J2-KCN, so some people think there are two IA B767 arround.

Four of the five AB 734 will go to Bluebird Cargo.

Confirmed IA has ONLY 1 762 J2-KCN (Ex ACA C-GAVA), as PRESIDENTIAL aircraft.
This plane was at ORY last week with the Iraqi president.
He is stationned at AMM , when not flying.

I know, but according to the EU's website, which says it was updated in October, Ariana is totally banned. There aren't very many recent pics of it, and the pics that are there are different A310s, all under wetlease, so I guess Ariana is not technically flying to Frankfurt, and the EU plays along...

Do they still have their own A310 ? That was their only aircraft not banned from EU airspace.
Exceptions confirm the rule.
