Wide-bodies On Intra-European Or Domestic Flights

Mon Nov 13, 2006 7:54 pm

Hey guys, if this had been discussed before, please feel free to delete this toppic. I already did a search without success. anyway...

I came along this trip report of a.netter Ndebele Uniting Nations - Swiss A330 To GVA, With Pics (by Ndebele Jan 28 2006 in Trip Reports)

My question is, are there any other scheduled intra-European or deomestic flights operated with wide-bodies? LH do with A306 and BA with B767. But are there any other? I heard about IB MAD-FRA with A346 some times ago. Is this information still existent?

Thx for all replies.
Cheers

Back in the "good old days" and not so distant past, Jat Airways used to fly the DC-10-30 (YU-AMB) on summer flights BEG-TIV. Tivat approach can be very challenging, it was really special to see the DC-10 land there.

I flew once TIV-BEG on this beauty and we truly rocketed out at takeoff.

Very often the plane was also used on the high-load route BEG-ZRH.

In this case it's because on the high load factor they have on those flights.
But for the GVA-ZRH or ZRH-GVA, it's in the only purpose of ferrying the plane that does the JFK flight.

During winter, Monarch uses sometimes the A300-600 from the UK and used to fly with the DC-10.

Britannia Airways (thomson fly) also uses the 767-300ER !! from UK

Same in HAM, only just the IL96. It's a welcome change from the usual Tupolev or A319.

TK flies 330s and 340s to several cities in Europe especially summer (DUS, FRA, LHR, ORY, ZRH, LYS, AMS, GVA have all seen these aircraft). TK also flies them on high demand domestic routes to BJV, DLM, AYT or ESB.

Air Inter also used A300 and later A330-300.

Air Inter operated a fleet up to 22 Airbus A300 (314 Y) and 4 A330 (412 Y )on its French domestoc Network.

In 1988/89 Air Inter even wet leased from AF a B747-100 (F-BPVD). It was operated on the biggest routes from ORY (to MRS, BOD, NCE and TLS).
Air Inter almost bought 3 second hand B747SR from JAL, but finally decided to add more A300 to its fleet instead.

As mentionned previously, Air France operated a large fleet of A300 & A310 on its European network until the late 90s.
B747 were also sometimes used on the busiest CDG-LHR route, as shown on this pic. :

AF is still using sometimes a B744 on flights such as CDG-NCE during hight peak season or special events (Cannes Film Festival, Monte Carlo Grand-Prix ) and also on CDG-AJA, during the summer season.

A few years ago, Aeroflot used to fly Il-86's from Moscow to key European destinations (Frankfurt, Paris, London, Milan, etc). Don't know if they do anymore.

Interesting how times change. Going back 15-20 years the following airlines all used widebodies for scheduled flights/sectors within Europe. Not all the sectors were operated under Fifth Freedom rights.

The list does not include charter carriers of the time, some of the types were used regularly only on peak day or peak hour flights to replace the scheduled types to cater for heavy loads, e.g. Iberia DC10s on the teatime flight into Heathrow from Madrid:

Aeroflot IL86
Aer Lingus B747
Aerolineas Argentinas B747
Air France A300 A310
Air Inter A300
Alitalia A300 DC10
Air Portugal A310 L1011
Bangladesh DC10
British Airways B747 B767 L1011
Finnair A300 DC10
Iberia A300 DC10
Iran Air B747
Japan Air B747
JAT DC10
KLM A310 DC10
Kenya A310
Lufthansa A300 A310
Olympic A300 B747
Qantas B747
Sabena A310 B747
SAS DC10 B747
Singapore AL B747
Swissair A310 DC10
Syrian Air B747SP
THY DC10
UTA DC10

There were others which had short lived intra European sectors using wide bodies such as Air India, Ariana, Egyptair, Iraqi, Kuwait, Malaysian, Nigerian, Pakistani, Saudia, Thai.

No you didn't but it was to confirm what you said, in opposition to my following explanation.
As to for the GVA-ZRH it's for aircraft positionning for JFK!!
Don't be so "susceptible" (sorry I don't know if this word exists in english. If it's not the case it's a french word)

Some input from/to BCN:

BA flies every morning from LHR using a 762
IB uses quite often a 343 in afternoon "puente aéreo" vs. MAD
SQ flies a T7 (i don't know what series though) to/from MXP as an extension from SIN

in the past too IB was flying a DC10 to JFK with stopovers in MAD, and I recall the extinct TWA doing the same via LIS with 767s I think
