Air India To Lease 4 Boeing Widebody Aircraft

Tue Nov 14, 2006 5:50 am

Air India recently announced that it will dry-lease 3 Boeing aircraft from Montrose Global Capial LLC.

The Indian airline has signed a LOI for a lease three Boeing 747-400's. The aircraft will join the AI fleet in February and March 2007. Any idea where these aircraft will come from; some have said they are to get one from NZ?

Air India will also wet lease a Boeing 767-300ER from FlyGlobespan. Any idea which aircraft will be leased?

The B763 will be flown on BOM-DEL-BKK and BOM-DEL-KUL routes from Nov 22. I was under the impression that Flyglobespan needed their 763's to begin new services to international destinations such as CPT?

Air India will also extend the lease on two A310-300 aircraft which are on dry lease up to February and April of next year.

What will happen to the remaining 744's in the fleet; perhaps someone could clear this up!?

I am not sure what is to happen to the B744s but AI is going to start taking deliveries of their new B772LR and 773ER starting in march 2007.

GSM do really need two B763's this winter - one at MAN and the other at GLA. But I guess they may cut soem flights and try and get by with 1 B763 and maybe send a B738 across the pond again

I thought they were leasing more ex-UA 777's. It seems Air India can't get their new planes fast enough. They could have leased 3 MD-11's Boeing is leasing to TAM, but I guess they didn't like that idea.

Good question...I don't know.

But I would like to know what the fate of that 743 is in the photo you posted.

You are right, 1 744 is coming from NZ. Most likely to be ZK-SUH or I.

I have heard the 763 to be leased is their latest addition G-CEFG which is ex NZ ZK-NCH.

About the leased 747-400 aircraft

VT-AIQ has been returned on 16th Oct 06 and has been deregistered.
VT-AIC is in Pusan and will be handed over to Koreanair, will be
deregistered as they accept it back.
VT-AID will be leaving for Pusan in Nov.[perhaps is on ts last flight]

That would be brilliant an MD-11 in the colours of AI---but i think the inexperience with that aircraft type made them go for the above deal.

Isn't this going to cause problems though if the 767 does tech? Surely they would be better off keeping the 2 767s while they are starting flights and trying to gain market share?

Thanks for that info, i had a feeling that AI may have returned some B747s as their flights into LHR during the past 7-10 days have been delayed or cancelled, probably due to aircraft shortage.

They won't need to do that when they get their B752 for trans atlantic services.

I wonder what scheduled services they have still have in place. I know they had cut back on their LAX services.

Does anyone know the registration for the AI B773ER that they will start to get next year? How many are joining the fleet besides the 4 B772LR?

Well the first 772LR's will be VT-ALA/B/C/D. I am unsure of the registrations of the 77W's.

4 more 772LR's will also arrive (after the four above) and there will also be 15 77W's and 27 787-8's.

Yes, Flyglobespan will operate the 752 on transaltantic routes. Two will come from Excel Airways. They will be G-VKNB and G-VKNC. (Older machines). I'm not sure if they will receive any others.

Thanks Karan for the update. I've flown on VT-AIQ/C/D before; will be a shame to see them go.  Sad

Any idea on any new operators for these 744's?

Would love to see AIs B773ER at IAD. I wonder if they will announce that as well.

for the 777-200LR, I think DEL-LAX would be given preference over DEL-YVR, what do you think?

I'd strongly recommend BOM-YYZ instead of DEL-YYZ. The reaons are obvious and the current DEL-ATQ-BHX-YYZ is doing just fine for them.

I dont think India-Canada has it in it to support a non-stop market year round especially on the premim side of things[ atleast from the Indian side . ]---i know AC did pretty well but remember YYZ is their largest hub and at that time they were the only ones to operate non-stop on the India-N.america route.

AI should continuoe with their DEL-ATQ-BHX-YYZ service making it into an efficient daily operations and YVR if ever served should also be served from North India via another country like MAN/BHX/PEK/HKG etc...

I saw AID at LHR on Monday 13th. Is EVB going to be in the fleet for the forseeable future? It was on stand next to us and the paint is getting a bit rough, particularly the red from the tail was running down the rear fuselage, and was almost as dirty as an AF machine...

There is a large Indian community here and I believe there may be enough traffic for maybe 3 weekly flights like KE & SQ do, but i agree it would probably work better via another city, probably Europe like LHR, MAN or CDG.

Actually, they are 74D (combis) and they make a living on the India-NRT route. Hopefully, something else will crop up in Japan soon.

With that schedule AI could have a daily nonstop flights working on SFO-BLR by By March. They will make a killing on this route.
