JAKARTA, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- A Russian plane hired for a special mission of
extinguishing forest fires in Indonesia skidded off runway at South
Kalimantan's airport amid heavy rain Friday, but no one was injured in the
The BE-200 aircraft was unable to stop at the end of Syamsuddin Noor
Airport's runway in the provincial capital of Banjarmasin and went across
the line until the landing gear plunged into a ditch 50 meters from the
runway, reported the leading news website Detikcom.
The plane carried 12 Russian crews and an Indonesian assistant.
"Heavy rain has made the runway very slippery," airport official Siswadi
was quoted as saying.
The government have leased two amphibious BE-200s supported by 29 crew from the Russian Emergencies Ministry since early this month to help fight
forest fires in Kalimantan and Sumatra islands.
