United Airlines @SLC Pre-Deregulation, 1978

Wed Nov 15, 2006 4:42 pm

Seemingly once upon a time, UA had a significant focus operation in Salt Lake City, and rivaled Western Airlines for being the dominant carrier at SLC. As I recall UA had 727 and 737 flights at least 3x-4x per day to ORD from SLC, and at least 4x-5x per day 737s going to DEN. Not to mention 3x 727 service to SFO and flights to LAX and SEA not to mention a direct flight to IAD.
All of you UA buffs out there please feel free to fill me on on the history of UA at SLC especially prior to the big Western build-up in 1982 when they established a hub, and the merger with DL in 1987. Your thoughts...

In the 70's and 80's United also flew JFK-SLC-SMF-SFO with DC-8's. That was numbered Flight 767 according to November 1979 OAG guide. I used to watch that flight leave the gate at JFK while I was waiting for Flight 29 (747-200) which left at 6pm to SFO. Those were the days......

That would explain the pics my dad has of DC-8s and later 767's of UA in SLC

I haven't had a chance to go review any additional old schedules yet, but didn't they also have flights to SEA, LAX and SAN? I think UA competed with WA on the SLC-LAX run as I recall. I know to go to PHX or LAS you had to either go WA or Hughes Air West.
