SAA Plans To Fly 3x Daily To Brazil By 2010

Wed Nov 15, 2006 10:49 pm

South African Airways presented yesterday their long term strategy for Brazil.

SAA South America director announced they have plans to fly 2x daily to Sao Paulo and by 2008 begins flights GIG-JNB, first of all with 3x weekly flights, increasing during 2 years to offer for World Cup 2010 a daily flight Rio-Johanesburg.

SAA also confirm they will establish an office in Rio very shortly and will improve Africa visibility as a sponsor of one of the top samba schools during Rio's Carnival 2007, Porto da Pedra.

SAA will also provide immediate connection for passengers to India using the 3 new frequencies they will add on Sao Paulo-Johanesburg.

Nothing announced in terms of other South America countries.

One thing is for sure: GRU will be upgarded from daily to 10 weekly in June/2007.

The long term plan is to upgraded GRU to twice daily flights and start GIG operations 3 x week in 2008. I think this is too much of an expansion for such a short period. There were indications as well that EZE would receive SA flights.

In my opinion, the statement is more a reaction to OceanAir's plan to serve JNB.

Gentlemen, it is so interesting to see how tremendoulsy traffic is growing between the two countrires.

I believe South African is very smart in positioning JNB as the gateway to all of Africa from Brazil and the rest of South America. How competitive are they in terms of fares and connectivity ?

Now, looking forward to having Ocen Air jump on stage.

Best regards

It's a growing market, with many new partnerships announced every month. Not so big nowadays.

Not only 3x weekly but a daily flight by 2010, see Panrotas.

Also a reaction to TAAG announcement to run 3x weekly GIG-LAD.

Agree with you. One of the top brazilian banks announce they probably will open subsidiary in Africa, probably Angola. The SAA problem is LAD and LOS, LAD in fact will be a 6x daily market very soon with Ocean Air, and with LOS, JNB will be 50% of the market only and not as well positioned as LOS while SAA fleet is larger.

A round trip Rio-Luanda-Rio costs US$ 1,100 on Y, one r/t Sao Paulo-Johanesburg-Sao, the same. SAA is by far the best option in connections with a huge fleet and network, TAAG is much more limited.

This is only a plan. The only commitment is to upgrade GRU-JNB from daily to 10 per week from July/07.

SA Director lin Brazil is known for his vague words that never become reality. Every once and again he states that SA will fly to a new destination... Just a couple of weeks ago he stated that SA would open EZE instead of GIG http://www1.airliners.net/discussion...eneral_aviation/read.main/2943807/

To be very honest, in my opinion SA will operate twice daily GRU-JNB. Only after consolidation of GRU with twice daily flights they will look forward to GIG and/or EZE. SA HQ have firm commitments for GRU, other destinations are just in the pipeline, under study, but nothing concrete.
