T.F. Green opens streamlined security area
WARWICK – The R.I. Airport Corporation today unveiled a new central “passenger queuing area” for the upper-level security checkpoint at T.F. Green Airport that is part of a post-9/11 effort to make the airport's lobby "convenient once again."

The changes were described yesterday by Patti Goldstein, vice president of public affairs and air service marketing, as “the first major milestone” in the terminal improvement program the airport announced this spring.

To speed security check-ins, the area where passengers line up for screening has been expanded to eight lanes, each of which is wider and longer than before. And to give additional privacy to passengers who are pulled aside for more thorough searches, secondary screening areas and private screening rooms have been added.

A portion of the lobby that previously was open to the first floor has been filled in to make room for the expansion of the second-floor security area.

Other changes include the relocation of the lobby’s escalator and stairs to the front of the terminal, away from the security checkpoint; the addition of structural supports and a terrazzo floor, to help delineate the security area; and a new camera system that airport officials said offers "enhanced surveillance capabilities."

Downstairs, a new information booth – with built-in touch screens and direct-connect phones – has been placed in front of the lobby's well-known sailboat.

Airport officials hope the work “will help eliminate confusing intersecting lines in the lobby during peak times,” such as the upcoming holiday travel season, “and will streamline security screening procedures,” according to a statement issued today.

“We’re extremely pleased to have met this milestone in our two-year Terminal Improvement Project,” Mark Brewer, president and CEO of the Airport Corporation, said at the ribbon-cutting today.

“Since the important, enhanced security procedures that followed the events of September 11th, we’ve long envisioned making the lobby area convenient once again for our passengers. We’re one step closer to achieving that goal today.”

Also scheduled for completion this winter at T.F. Green, the Airport Corporation said, are a glass elevator at the center of the airport lobby and a first-floor concessions café, with a seating area to accommodate “meters and greeters,” in front of the future exit ramps for passengers leaving the airport.

“T.F. Green Airport has been committed to meeting the changing needs of our travelers since we opened the new terminal 10 years ago,” said James Rosati, chair of Airport Corporation’s board of directors. “We’re pleased with the new checkpoint area and expect our customers will appreciate a more streamlined process during one of our busiest travel periods.”

The period from the Wednesday before Thanksgiving to the following Tuesday – this year, Nov. 25 to 31 – traditionally is the nation’s most intense for travel.

The is great for PVD. I never was a fan of their check-in situation and the moves they have made will be good for everyone coming into and out of PVD.

Are they planning on moving the checked luggage screening equipment?

Congrats to PVD for trying to make things better. Does the TSA plan to have all eight screening lanes open during busy times, or (like at other airports) will passengers continue to line up while half of the available lanes are closed off?

yes - wait times during peak times have been cut by more than 50% from what I've heard. The most I've heard since it opened is 16 minutes. There is almost zero wait time most of the day after the big morning rush except a few small afternoon spikes - even then its 5 minutes max.

The best thing is the unquantifyable imoprovement in the process in general. It used to be so nerve racking during the rush, now it's just so much more organized. It will really get better when the EDS machines are out of the ticket areas...
