Royal Jordanian To Start Montreal In May/07

Thu Nov 16, 2006 6:30 am

Royal Jordanian is starting a brand new route to Montreal ( YUL ) in May 2007 .
The Jordanian ambassador to Canada was quoted that he hopes his country would sign an open sky agreement with Canada , he also said that Royal Jordanian is to start YUL service ( a comment that was confirmed by RJ officials later on ) in the Summer and that RJ may be looking at YYZ at a later time .
The Airline used to fly AMM-AMS-YYZ in the 90's , a service that was stopped in the late 90's .
No words yet on how many days a week the Airline is planning to operate between AMM and YUL .
The only Middle Eastern/North African Airlines that serve YUL currently are Royal Air Maroc ( year round ) and Egyptair ( summer only ) .

Excellent news indeed!

Royal Jordanian just won the Best Airline Turnaround 2006 award. They also just updated their web site (it no longer looks like shit) -

http://www.rj.com/

The site has heaps of stuff worth checking out.

I am wondering if the new Canada route is partly due to oneworld... since Air Canada took over Canadian Airlines, oneworld have had a hole in the route network with no carrier in Canada.

I'm flying RJ myself from LHR-AMM-BKK in April in Crown Class - really looking forward to trying them!
I do quite enjoy a spot of flying - more so when it's not in Economy!

But unless RJ are going to have traffic rights to operate domestically, it would be no different to both BA and AA operating into and out of Canada.

Am I reading you correctly?

Although that sounds very exciting, to see RJ back in Montreal, let's see if they offer a good product, hassle free and delays-free.

The flights to Montreal in the 1990s were always notoriously late and the aircraft were outdated (Tristars).

The L1011's may have een outdated, but I loved flying them. I have flown many times between JFK and AMS on RJ L1011's. Great fares, good seat pitch in Y and good inflight service. Ok Royal Jordanian is known because of the delays; but you cannot beat the price and service.

I am wondering what Royal Jordanian will do with their Traffic rights, New York-Amsterdam?

most likely it will be a 2-3 weekly nonstop operation with the A 340.

but they dont have a spare A 340 to fly this route as they have increased frequencies to USA recently.

i imagine that they would have to purchase/lease in one A 340 to accomodate YUL expansion.

Royal Jordanian already code-shares with Air Canada on their flights between London ( LHR ) and Toronto/Montreal .

I am not aware of these flights to Montreal in the 90's , all i remember is the AMM-AMS-YYZ flights . Were these flights via AMS as well ?

They are known for their very good food service too . I think this is great news because it will give passengers to M/E and South Asia more option which will hopefully translates to lower fares .

That's what i was wondering too , i think they are a bit short in long-haul A/C , they only own 4 A340's

RJ started YUL in the early 1990s, as a AMM-AMS-YUL service. Sometimes when wind conditions permitted, the return flight was made direct (I remember flying direct once on a Tristar from Mirabel Airport to Amman).

At some point, Toronto was added to the network and from what I recall during my experiences with them, the service was AMM-AMS-YMX-YYZ. It's possible that during peak seasons, RJ operated AMM-AMS-YYZ. Anyways, those multiple stops addingto the lack of long haul punctuality at the time caused hair-raising delays..and the reason was always announced as 'late arrival of the aircraft'.

I remember during these years that connecting in Amman to other Middle Eastern cities was boring as there were very few airport facilities, although their short haul flights were incomparably superior (younger aircraft, at least when the A320 joined, punctual, etc).

RJ ended YMX in 1997. They flew 2 weekly YYZ-YUL-AMM eastbound and AMM-AMS-YMX-YYZ westbound.

RJ's service to YUL will likely focus on the following flow markets; BEY, THR, DAM, CAI, DXB

This is fantastic news. It's great to see RJ pull that service back on the schedules.

The past few years or so, they have been heavily focusing on improving their regional connectivity and service. I also heard somewhere that following this they will also improve their long-haul offering so this may be a start.

While i have not flown them recently, they really do seem to have developed a better strategic vision than they had in the past and i think they are achieving great results so far. way to go RJ!

I hope to see LAX and MIA back on their schedules soon!

Anyone know anything about their long-haul fleet? whether they will replace their current A340's or not? I know they will at least add IFE's to all seats on their aircraft.

I would add Colombo,Delhi and Mumbai to that list .
It looks like Egyptair will have a tough competition from Royal Jordanian in the YUL / Middle East market as AMM is equally well positioned geographically as CAI to serve this market . We will see what MS will do ( whether it will go CAI-YUL year-round as opposed to Summer only ) .

Latest RJ news : Royal Jordanian carried 145,000 passengers during October 2006, which is a 19% increase to a total of 121,000 passengers carried in October 2005. The airline operated 2,077 flights compared to 1,570 flights in October 2005, with 32% increase and an average of 67 daily flights.

I could see RJ trying to procure another 342 or maybe a 343. But I think a 342 would be perfect on this route. I believe Royal Brunei has one stored for a while, and there may be a few others out there available, maybe the Conviasa 342?

A340-200 - Max cruising speed 914km/h (494kt), economical cruising speed 880km/h (475kt). Range at typical airline operating weight with 263 passengers and reserves 13,805km (7450nm).
A340-300 - Speeds same. Range at typical airline operating weight with 295 passengers and reserves 12,415km (6700nm).

I checked the utilization of their A342's and it is as follows :
ORD : 4 weekly flights increasing to 5 weekly in the Summer .
DTW: 2 weekly year-round via ORD .
JFK : 3 weekly increasing to 4 weekly in the Summer .
BKK : 5 weekly year-round .
So i believe it is feasible to add YUL without having to buy/lease another A342 .

Nice , I would expect a trip report on your flight with RJ  Wink

On another note , Royal Jordanian has launched a new website having an internet booking engine, which allows the customer to directly arrange for the flights online. The online booking facility provides the lowest fares, direct booking capabilities, selecting seats, paying online and issuing Electronic tickets. Its only flaw is that you have to start your journey from Amman , if you try too book from another city to AMM , the system won't let you book it .
