Nose Camera's

Fri Nov 17, 2006 1:39 am

What airlines / aircraft currently have a nose camera so you can see take off / landing?

I don't know of any. I believe that AA's DC-10's were among the last to have them from my experience.

I've been on a SAS A340 with one. Air China ordered them on their 747s and 777s if I recall correctly.

Emirates have them on A340-500s you can see the flight from the nose or tail. Maybe SQ have them but I'm not sure.

Air France on A330 (and maybe other aircraft), I am not sure if they are switched on during take-off and landing.

I have experienced nose view cameras two times within the last year.

EK A340 SYD-CHC and a NZ 744 AKL-SFO. Both had belly mounted cameras to see straight down and nose cameras to see ahead. Kinda cool.

Ek A332's and B777's had both nose and belly cams last time I used them.

Any one know if VS A346's have any cameras that passengers can watch?

On AF the camera views cannot be seen during takeoff or landing (not shown on the main screens and PTVs are off) - that makes them pretty useless. Only once did they show the takeoff on the main screen while I was on board. I read long ago that some passengers are scared...

I'd love to be able to see takeoffs and landings on my PTV...

In the US, maybe. Lots of foreign carriers have them.

Sri Lankan Airlines' A330s have nose and belly mounted cameras. Very cool to see a landing through that view...

Looks like I might have to book an EK flight soon then!

I'm flying GF but they seem to only have them on the A330.

Thanks for all the replies thus far.

I flew AF 454 / 12-NOV CDG GRU, B77W (B-777-300ER) and they had a fully operational camera also during landing (did not notice takeoff). Image quality was very low, however.

Can confirm this - also for B777 camera on top of the tail looking forward so you can see the whole aircraft.

Iberia has a tail camera on their A340-600s.

When I flew Air France on their A330-200 the nose camera worked the entire duration of the flight on the PTVs however the cloudy Atlantic Ocean below wasn't much to look at.

I'll be flying the 777-300ER tonight on Air France, I'll let you guys know about the cameras.

They didn't have the camera on the tail on the 777's when I flew them, but that was 2 years ago.
I am hoping that the VS A346's have the tail cam for veiwing.

Didn't AA DC-10s have cameras in the cockpit, as opposed to mounted externally? That's how I remember them, at least.

SAS also has belly cameras on their A340s. On departure from Copenhagen, the screens defaulted to the nose cam during taxi, and as soon as the main gear left the ground, the camera switched to the belly cam.

LX has nose and belly cameras on the A340s. There are also a couple of A320s in the LX fleet (the ex Swiss Sun ones) that have them.

The JL 744s actually offer two options to choose from on the PTVs. One is called Bird's eye, and the other may be called look forward?? Two different perspectives with about 30 degrees difference.

While not on the nose, the CX & MU 340-600s have a forward looking tail mounted camera. On China Eastern they run it most of the flight and only turn it off on final approach, and then restart at the end of the landing run.
