^ Haha yea I was going to get to that. I'm pretty excited to see PIT-BWI as I had heard that rumor while I was working in BWI earlier this year. Also CLE-MCO is surprising but nice to see.

Jesus, all of that expansion, and MSY gets the shaft again from WN. It's pretty sad, but hardly surprising.

I have a great idea. WN should do us all a favor at MSY and give up 3/4 of its ticket counter space since 3/4 of it is just sitting there collecting dust (roughly 11 out of 16 check in positions are never used). Also, what's the use of having six jetways if no more than three at a time are ever used? Waste of money and space.

It would be nice if it was all pure expansion. What they dont tell you is we are drawing down and stopping other markets. Look up BDL-PHL. I heard its going away completely.

Yea I work at BDL, but those PHL-BDL flights are usually empty, so it's much smarter to abandon those routes for better ones. Overall it's expansion as PHL lost 3 BDL flights but gained 1 RDU, 1 MHT, 1 TPA, and 1 PBI. I don't think any other routes have been cancelled besides BDL-PHL.

Probably competition for FL's CAK-MCO flight along with the obvious CO CLE competition. Freedom also operates one daily CAK-MCO flight.

Nice to see more service here. I would like to see a TUS-OAK nonstop though. Maybe a continuation from an ABQ flight for a ABQ-TUS-OAK routing.

Surprising to see no PHX expansion.

Like the PHL-BDL dissapearing for the PHL expansion, CLE loses 2 daily BNA and 1 daily MDW to gain out two MCO. But, like mentioned above, HDQ seems to know what they are doing as only two of the four BNA draw many customers, and except for Friday and Sunday, the MDW loads are all around less than impressive.

Now if we could only get those PHL nonstops...

And there are still expansion opportunities out West from Phoenix as well:
Boise
Spokane
Harlingen-RGV
Lubbock
Midland-O
Amarillo

Out East, the only markets I could see happening anytime soon would be:

Washington-D
Ft Lauderdale
Hartford-S

-and-

Maybe, a couple of years from now:

Islip

Not sure if Manchester, Albany, Norfolk and Jackson are mature enough markets at this point. Whereas Ft Myers, West Palm Beach, and Jacksonville are many years away, if ever at all.

I figured PIT-BWI was inevitable on FL or WN one of these days. I was secretly pulling for FL though.

You still can't get from PIT-DAL though. So maybe Pittsburgh-St.L will be in the next round??

Fram what I've seen of BDL's new schedule, we will avtually be gaining an inbound DAL direct flight (DAL-HOU-MCO-BDL I believe.) I'm sure that there are many more cities that will have the same service, if you play around a bit. As far as the BDL-PHL disappearing, I couldn't be happier. I work at least one of those flights everyday and it's almost not worth it. The only draw on that particular flight is that it goes on to RDU, the only direct we have, but when you have ATC delays soooo often.... Nah, don't bother.

[Hand raised and waving wildly!] Yes! Big grin Right you are MAH.

First new SD flights since Feb 2006; I was hoping for more but it's a start. (I predict SAN-HOU or SAN-DEN next...)

Interesting that WN is still staying away from DEN-CA flights.

I know at the last MAJOR schedule rework (Feb 5 2006) the PR even explained that they had reduced some markets that were underperforming and added a bunch of new a/c. Looks like the same thing this time. WN continues to do things right and in a way that keeps profitability up.

I haven't even looked at the sked's yet to see if any SAN markets were reduced; looks like my afternoon is now occupied... (Note to self: GET A LIFE!)

Thank you WN for not forgetting about our little corner of the country.

Believe me: up here at MHT we are, too. PHX has been on our wish list for ever. We say this because WN 'generally' (i.e. with some exceptions) likes to mirror PVD/MHT. They (PVD) have PHX and LAS; we 'only' have LAS. But the demand from MHT to PHX is there. I'd have figured instead of a 5th MCO nonstop our first to PHX might have been a good way to re-purpose one of those BDL casualties.

FINALLY, we see PIT-BWI! I am very happy for Pittsburgh International, Southwest Airlines, and the PIT PAX. I did notice US Airways had recently dropped PIT-BWI down to around $104 one-way. PIT-BWI is Def. going to see an explosion in O&D PAX.

Does anyone think US will upgrade PIT-BWI from 1 CRJ and 4 ERJs to maybe 2 ERJs, 1 or 2 E70s, and 1 B733/A319?

I'm a little dissapointed that PVD didn't even get 1 additional flight, never mind a new market. PVD hasn't seen much service growth in the lat year. 11/12/05 saw the new LAS nonstop and 7/5/06 saw the 6th PHL come on-line. That doesn't include the loss of a BNA flight and the MCI flight in 2/06)Assuming no additional flights are added through 4/15/07 (the last of the new service announced today) thats a long stretch of slow to no groeth here for them...

Eventually I suspect they will add a few flights out of PVD. Seems like New England kinda got the short end of the stick this time around. Only MHT pulled out with two extra flights, while BDL lost 3 and PVD stayed the same. So a net loss of 1 for the region.

My guess was that WN would do a DAL-BHM-RDU through-routing 2x/day. However, the new DAL-BHM flights seem to just be local.

Overall, I'm disappointed at the lack of new nonstop service in this announcement. In a majority of cases, WN seems to be adding additional flights in high frequency markets (e.g. BUR-SMF 10 ->11, LAS-SJC 8 -> 9, PDX-SMF 6 -> 7, LAS-MDW 11 -> 12, etc.) I thought that we might see a couple of additional DEN or IAD flights announced.

Yes...it would be cool to see its return...maybe in light of the new gates opening up at T2.

"As Kelly said in July, the top priorities remain adding capacity in Denver, Philadelphia, Las Vegas and Chicago (DAILY, July 20). Southwest always has a long list of possible new cities, but it hasn't made any decisions for 2007. "In a lot of ways, we would like to go through next year without any new cities," he said. "We have so many needs in our existing system, it just makes it harder to justify adding yet another new city in the near term."
from Southwest's Momentum 'Stalls'; Used Boeing 737-700 Joins Fleet
By Steven Lott/Aviation Daily 10/06/2006
(I remember other releases with similar comments by Kelly with additional cities mentioned e.g., RNO, MSY, BWI, MCO, but I didn't have time to locate the exact source. Sorry.)
In any case, this is pretty much what happened on this schedule re-work. Of the 26 new or expanded routes (all involving existing stations), 6 involve MDW, 5 serve MCO, 4 to LAS, 4 from PHL, 1 each for DEN, RNO and BWI. On the other hand, about 31 different stations received at least 1 new flight; that's half of WN's cities! How often does a carrier, in one schedule change, add service to half of it's stations? And keep in mind that WN did this same thing earlier this year (in February.) Also, there certainly have been other service increases recently with new service to additional cities such as MSY, HOU, BNA, BOI, PHX, and DTW

I think Gary is keeping his word and doing just what he said. WN will obviously continue to grow their largest stations and certain others that they feel have good growth potential. But of course those cities grow by adding flights to the rest of the route network and WN seems to me to spread the wealth pretty well.

I for one am anxious to see the next round of service expansions, maybe in May or June?

Wow there finally going international! Seems like Southwest are following FlyGlobespan a UK LCC is flying their 738's accross the Atlantic to BOS, YYZ and JFK.

Seems to be a trend of 737's flying accross the Atlantic!

So Southwest are going to take on the likes of US Airways to PHL and Virgin to MCO which both fly from MAN. Even though Southwest use 737's 6 times a day seems a bit of an over kill in capacity!

Just tried to google this and no news this side of the Atlantic on Manchester Airport website.

If it WERE Manchester U.K. the Airliners.net servers would crash and burn  bomb

Seriously, some charter company should start MAN-MHT service. Great New England skiing; heck, with the exchange rate it's probably cheaper for a family in Europe to come here for a ski holiday than 'just go to Switzerland!'

The TUS-OAK existed at one time, I believe after the absorption of Morris Air. But that service was discontinued quite a while ago.

I flew OAK-TUS in July of 1997. It was a late afternoon flight. I am happy to see an aditional TUS-LAX flight. This increases connecting opportunities.

Oh you must be talking about the four flights added way back in June. That has been it. MSY has been thrown a cold shoulder by WN management, let's face it. Another care of being spooked by Katrina and having no idea how to react to a changing market. WN is a joke here now, and it has been all by its own doing.

We ARE a business and I am sure the company is doing what will make them MONEY first and foremost. I am from MSY (born/raised) and still have fmaily there and I know the city is still not what it was in terms of population so who knows what our loads would be like. I understand it's frustrating to feel like WN doesn't care, but again they are a business (that is short on aircraft...we bought 2 from FORD) and they have ot make money. Apparently rebuilding MSY isn't going to o that right now, we we've expanded in other areas.

I know this, but that still doesn't change what the perception of the company is down here. Honestly, the airline hasn't really made a good effort to change that perception. That is surprising considering the way that WN used to do things.

That is very obvious trust me. And the longer the airline goes with ignoring the market, they will see more passengers defecting over to CO, DL, etc.

As i've said, if they plan on keeping a minimal presence here, the airline should do the airport a favor and give up 3/4 of its counter space.

What they dont tell you is we are drawing down and stopping other markets.

All part of their overall plan to raise their length-of-haul numbers. With exceptions like BWI-PIT, probably a high traffic city-pair, they need to eliminate shorthaul, high CASM flights that aren't real winners. Otherwise, it's not hard to project greater operating losses, which they can't absorb as their fuel hedges wind down.
