Is The Aeroflot - 787 Deal Back On?

Fri Nov 17, 2006 3:38 am

I saw on another aviation web site that Interfax is reporting that Boeing has actually extended the deadline for SU to sign the 787 deal till Dec. 1st. This may not be too much of a surprise as the US and Russia come to terms on Russia's membership in the WTO. They're supposed to sign the agreement soon so perhaps the 787 deal is back on. Also interestingly enough, Boeing had commented on the WTO agreement:

Putin and Bush met yesterday in Moscow and I believe they will meet again in Hanoi.

Comments are comments, with Russia looking to buy a stake in Airbus which way do you think this deal will go.

Russia are not exactly buddy buddy with the US at the moment.

But politics is politics so maybe there is a payoff in the pipeline.

Well if Boeing felt that way they wouldn't have given Aeroflot the exxtension, right? Those are very valuable early delivery slots which they can probably sell out of quite quickly. I think the WTO agreement along with giving some goodwill to Aeroflot and Ledbedev is going to help Boeing seal this deal. Hopefully the politicos will get out of the way going forward.

Also, nothing is stopping Russia from buying both the 787 and the A350XWB for SU, as has been rumored.

So now that Russia is in the WTO, formally ordering the 787 as a "quid pro quo" can happen and then if and when the EU acedes to Russia's demands, a formal "quid pro quo" order for the A350XWB can happen.

Boeing just agreed to invest 18 billion $ into buying titanium from Russia

Russians also have some degree of partcipation with close to 300 engineers helping out boeing design the 787 and LCF. Boeing's moscow center employs close to 1000 engineers.

With Putin, it's ALL politics. I can't imagine that he could resist using the Aeroflot deal as a "tickler" on the WTO agreement. In Russia these days, there is no getting the politicos out of the way, on the contrary, most of my acquaintances there tend to view the Western distinction between politics and business as rather quaint.

Aeroflots Fleet Planning Chief, Mr Koltovich, speaking in Moscow has confirmed that Boeing have extended the deadline until December 1st for all 22 frames.

This one has so many twists it's bizarre.
