DL Adds JFK-PHX

Fri Nov 17, 2006 6:37 am

http://biz.yahoo.com/pz/061116/108991.html

Daily 737-800 service starts 2/15/07

"You want to take over our company....we add service to your hub"

Actually, this route makes a lot of sense based on the international connections, regardless of yesterday's news and how rediculous this may get before the dust settles.

Headed into the heart on US airways with 1 daily flight.

Competing with Jet Blue now.

I give the flight 6 months, then it'll be pulled.  devil

checkmark  They've announced this and stopped it numerous times. Once even operating a 763 on the route going JFK-PHX-SAN.

Maybe instead of merging they will just form a codeshare agreement.

In theory, yes, however if the planned schedules stay, the times svck for international connections. With an arrival at JFK at 6:45pm, the only flights pax could connect to are BRU (7:45), MXP (7:50), BOM (9:20), GRU (10:10), and under a no-delay scenario, DUB (7:25), FRA (7:20) and MAD (7:15). Most flights depart before this flight would even touch down. And the departure from JFK at 8:45am is far from ideal as well. So either DL reschedules the flight before it starts, or it will be gone soon.

That wont happen because that would be good for the consumer and we cant have that. It will only work if a handful of people will get insanely rich and if well can tell the little guy and the consumer to go screw themselves.

Actually, based on the times, it does not connect well at all with the majority of the international flights. The morning departure from JFK only allows for the arrival from BOM and GRU (though GRU to PHX is easier through ATL); similarly the return arrival at JFK is too late to connect to most international destinations except for MAN, MXP, GRU, BOM

Same problem that American had when they attempted PHX-JFK. Without an early morning departure from PHX for connections to Europe, this flight won't last long.

If it were timed better it would make sense. Right now there are quite a few itineraries from PHX to Europe that involve going to CVG and then connecting to JFK for international flights. I was wondering, "why doesn't Delta just do a non-stop to JFK?" But then they time it funny. Of course, the flight doesn't need to be full of international passengers. It could also have people connecting to places that Freedom flies to from JFK, not to mention all the O&D in New York. Remember, since CO has had a hub in Newark for a long time, there are plenty of OnePass members in NYC who could also earn miles on Delta, especially if Delta keeps fares low on the flight.

Good to see further expansion of JFK - I'd like to see PDX and DEN soon.

The international connections will help, but this also allows for some connections throughout the Northeast.

Yeah, because I'll bet you this was in direct relation to US offering to buy DL  Yeah sure I'm sure DL hadn't been planning on launching this service for months...In fact, I'll bet they just up and decided to start this service last night!  banghead

While I doubt this is anywhere close to a response to US's purchase offer.... I do find the timing quite interesting.

Who in their right mind would fly PHX-ICN through JFK?

If the price is right, there will be people in the seats.

Granted PHX-JFK-ICN is a bizarre routing. But it is a long flight no matter how you go.

DL discontinued this around April 2004. Wonder how long it will last this time.

Clearly a one-time thing to spite US Airways.

The recognition is undoubtley one-time only, referring to US Airways' HQ city.

For those skeptics in the crowd, when DL (re)started their SAN-JFK nonstop this last June, it was a 738 red-eye e/b and a very late w/b flight -- horrible times for both business travelers and those with European connections. I was unhappy with it and didn't think the service had a chance. It seemed all they wanted to do was compete head-to-head with the B6 red-eye.

The flight is now a perfectly timed r/t (e/b 8-ish am departure and w/b 9-10-ish pm arrival) operated with a 752! I'm willing to bet the flight is doing well and I hope 2007 will see maybe a further u/g to a 76 or perhaps added lift...

I don't know why the funky start-up sked -- maybe a/c availability or gate issues -- but the sked rework was announced only about a month after the inaugural.

Those of you "Wondering in Phoenix", be optimistic; I bet DL will do the same thing eventually for PHX! (I think DL is very serious about the JFK market this time around.)

Perhaps, but in the cases of CDG/FCO/TLV, I'm sure, alliance aside, DL would prefer to feed their own flights to the respective destination (TLV obviously only via ATL). And as said in other replies, PHX-JFK-ICN is abit far out, cheap or not.

Yep! And AA tried it too. A lot of players on the scene for the route. I would think that they would have timed it better for international connections. There is not a whole of people going from PHX to BRU.

PHX-JFK direct is well served already, and DL should have played into its strength here as it will be a few years before US launches international (intercontinental) service from PHX.

Perhaps it is seasonal as PHX and Arizona traffic demand spikes in the winter. Also the three JFK-PHX flights on HP/US seem to have a very high load factor.
