Air NZ Coy On Virgin

Fri Nov 17, 2006 10:57 am

Air NZ was refusing to comment yesterday on suggestions by analysts that it should seek a realtionship with DJ after dropping plans for an allianace with QF.
(from the Australian newspaper 17NOV page 30)

Sound's like the obvious next move, as both apparently losing money across tasman.

Yup it would make sense... prolly do something along the lines of NZ getting rid of Freedom in return for DJ leaving NZ's more profitable routes alone.
Wasn't SQ supposed to be buying a stake in DJ??
If so then a relationship between DJ and NZ would be great, perhaps if DJ improved its standards it could become a Star Alliance Associate airline and eventually even a member, thus providing SQ, NZ, SA, TG, UA etc with a domestic Australian offering.

I wonder if NZ could pre-empt major DJ expansion... and pick up a few international routes (blue chip)_ out of OZ to compete with QF. A DJ alliance would make this a reality... in the end it will come down to NZ putting an attractive deal on the table... who needs who most?

I couldn't help but smile at the thread title. So many implications  Smile

Replacing Freedom with those much anticipated E-Jets and upping the frequency a little would be a lovely compromise for us folk outside of the big three NZ cities (well really only two once WLG gets right-sized). It would also be nice to have a single seamless connection to smaller Australian destinations via BNE or SYD. And I'm sure an alliance with AirNZ would provide a nice boost to passengers for Virgin Blue.

But, how compatible are the airlines and their systems?

This was reported in Wellingtons Dominion Post a few days ago. DJ apprached NZ back in 2002 while NZ and QF were having talks about joining forces, around the same time QF cancelled its agreement with QO.
