Interesting pair of flights out of ATW
....after that DL
B763 dropped off the Patriots it was scheduled to head home to ATL
. At the same time, the daily non-stop ASA CRJ was scheduled to head down to ATL
The CRJ departed at 4:44pm, the B763 at 4:50pm. Right now, the 767 is in the lead, scheduled arrival time 1 minute ahead of the CRJ. However, the 767's total mileage is 9 miles less than the CRJ (767mi vs 775mi) and he's slower (467kts at FL410) while the CRJ cruises at FL310 and faster (500kts).
The total miles of the route is less for the 767....but flightaware shows that he has 311 miles left to go while the CRJ has 269. I'm wondering if this is because of the great difference in altitude - the higher the altitude, the longer you have to go around the earth's curve than the plane that is closer to the ground....the CRJ is at 31,000 and the 767 is at 41,000.......
