RE: Cielos DC10 Overrun At Barranquilla

Well, I just heard from a friend of mine that this ac tried to land in BAQ with crappy weather, and had reverses innoperative in engines 2 & 3, IIRC, seems that the pilot landed a bit too fast and with the wet runway and the loaded bird, it wasn't easy to stop, when he applied the reverser on #1, bc he tried to avoid the overshoot, the plane turned left and the front gear completely dug into the wet soil like a dagger. The captain is from Peru, and the F/O colombian (second hand source of this, of course, not him directly) and unfortunately, it seems that the Flight Engineer (or someone else in the crew) suffered some injuries, but it seems he's O.K.

Pls, this info is VERY MUCH second handed, so pls don't quote me on this, this is only pilot's gossips (a frien who knows tho FO told me that......) and this is how I knew it.

BAQ was closed most of the day, I was in MDE a few hours ago and a F50 arrived from BAQ. I expected someone from BAQ all day long in Medellin, but she had to be sent in a bus to CTG then to BOG and finally MDE (Basically, an all day long trip), of course, never got to meet with this person.

Cheers

It carries a flag next to the registration, so its one of the N-registered aircraft and not OB-1749. Its not N609GC or N831LA as well judging from details like the positioning of the tail logo. Could be N833LA or N614GC. Do they have more than these five DC-10s?

Yes they have more than just five DC-10.

But I can't say something about this aircraft.

The weather has been really crappy in Barranquilla.

This reminds me of the TA 767 overrun in the 90s.....Do you know what the aircraft was carrying?

Without being 100% sure, I would say that it's either N305FE or N609GC. But I tend more toward the former.

Thanks for sharing your breaking news:

Would you happen to know how badly the aircraft is damaged? It does not sound serious, but I had to ask anyway.

Sincerely,

AFAIK, cargo was being downloaded and all remainingu fuel too. The thing here is that ground where it sits is really wet, so whatever equipment is being used to lift the frame, has to b edone carefully, bc it might get stuck in the ground, instead of lifting the bird. Until that Cielos people will give a word on that, but the minor damages seem to be the first impression, nothing structural.

Cheers

Glad to hear eveyone was ok, hope she can get up flying again. This one is similar to the condition the Arrow Air DC-10F was after it overran at MGA.

Tomas.

Based on the photos, the Cielos don't seem that much damaged compared to the Arrow DC-10. Remains to know how important are the damages to the nose belly after the wheels collapsed.

I heard that some if not all of Cielos and Centurion DC10s had their reverses removed from their #1 and #3 as a measure to save weight/fuel/money. Is this an accepted practice? Is it legal? I assume overall safety is significantly impacted, as demonstrated in BAQ.

Wow!
Amazing Photos!

That is going to be some job getting that aircraft out of the mud.
Biggest problem I see is once its free, is cleaning the debris out from the engines! Oooh. But remarkably, looks like little, if any structural damage.

By the registration, is this an ex FedEx plane?

Are all of Cielos Airlines called "petete"?
What does that mean?
(OB-1749 is called "petete" and this one is called "petete IV" or something...)

I am surprised this happened, I have flown from BAQ many times in every type of plane ever imagined, even an Avianca 747 back in its day. The runway at BAQ has to be 3000 meter so how can this happen ? If the weather was that bad and the pilot was coming from Miami or Lima he should have enough fuel to fly to Cartagena or Panama.

Yes it seems it sort of slided and one of the landing gears got out of the Runway. They reported the Aircraft is EI-CEQ.

Another one!
A Colombian Air Force Cessna Caravan registered as FAC-5054 lost contact today at 7:20am Colombian time while flying from CACOM 5 (SKRG/MDE) to CACOM 4 located in Melgar, some 120ish miles southeast.

Does BAQ have a problem draining water from the runway/taxiway areas?
Sounds like with heavy rains that the water will stay around for awhile.
