BA Worker Busted Trying To Sneak Coke In 747 Nose

Sun Nov 19, 2006 3:17 am

Brief fair use excerpt from the sensationalist tabloid, The Sun:

Quote:
A BA flight engineer planned to smuggle £5million worth of cocaine into Britain — in a jumbo jet’s NOSECONE.

Gary Crane, 51, even staged a dummy run with a fake 20kg package flown from South Africa.

Baggage handler Neil Weir, 42, turned supergrass when they were rumbled, Reading Crown Court heard this week.

What in the world does that mean??

He ratted them out...lol

And this is certainly very unusual, but as said earlier it probably has been done before with success.

Thanks

Nice try.. Which once again shows that crews have to pass security the same way the passengers do - thoroughly.

However British Airways do not employ Flight Engineers any longer, what they mean probably is a ground engineer who works on flight departures, and I am not sure what security checks they have every time they enter the ramp. I would think they are equally as strict as passengers or flight crews

That's an interesting point. Last year we had the famous armed robbery of diamonds on the cargo apron at AMS, after which airside staff security has been stepped up significantly. Everyone entering airside on staff passes is checked thoroughly nowadays, whereas in the old days flashing the Schiphol staff ID was enough to be let through.

So the plane would've been flying a LOT faster overnight, but very unstable, then it would've refused to move for the next two days.

Just on a side note, on friday i was flew BOG-MDE on a AV 757 that after MED goes north to MIA. I sat on 33K and from my window I could see all the luggage being loaded and 2 security guards around the rampers cehcking everything they did and even more, if they went into the cargo hold of the ac, even having them taking their shoes and hats off (almost a body cavity search........) That search was tougher than on pax. It surprised me a bit, but this is how AV have to deal with drug dealers and try to avoid serious penalties from american authorities if any shipment of drugs is smuggled in one of their birds.

Cheers

JAAH
Next flights: AV BOG-ADZ-BOG, AV-UA BOG-IAD-ORD-IAD-BOG, BOG-FLL-BOG, LA BOG-MIA-BOG J
