Era Twin Otter Video Flying In Alaska

Sun Nov 19, 2006 5:46 am

I made this video 16 years ago while flying a Twin Otter for Era Aviation. I finally got around to digitizing it to share here. Most scenes are from Bethel, Alaska, but there is a nice shot of landing 200 miles north of Alaska on the ice flows. It really was as fun as it looked!

Enjoy it while it lasts.

Era is reportly replacing the trotters with 1900D's in the next year.

Yikes. 1900's sure won't be able to fly into some of the outlying Bethel Villages. Eek, shown in the video, is 1300 feet long.

Actually Era pulled out of Bethel about a year-year and half ago.

So what you recorded is history anyway.

Are you up to speed on Rowan selling Era to some Gulf helicopter operater that spun and sold off the airline last year to one of the Native corps (I forget which one). They went into bankrupcy protection last year. No more Convairs, DC-3's, Bethel hub. Right now they are flying 4 Dash-8's and the remaining Otters-which the 1900D's are going to replace. Probably will concentrate in SouthCentral for the time being.

Anyone know how many otters they even have, i remember they had 9 at one point but it would seem like they wouldnt need that many now that BET is closed.

Holy cow. Thanks for the update. I've been out of touch! Who's the big carrier in BET now to the villages?

Take your pick

Frontier
Hagglunds
Grant
Arctic Circle
ATS

I think I can honestly say the Bet-Village market is the most competitive one in Alaska.

The problem Era was having was that they where trying to compete with twin otters, when everybody else was flying Navajo's, 206's,and Caravans
