Mystery L-1011 At LAS Mid 1990's

Sun Nov 19, 2006 8:25 am

Does anyone recognize the L-1011 shown in the background of this pic?

What was the airline, what happened to them, and maybe what became of the plane?

Thanks.

I didn't know Rich International flew to LAS. I thought they were mainly a MIA to DTW and other northeastern destinations.

Rich International went everywhere- they were also a charter airline (one route was FRA-ANC-HNL). They went out of business after some extremely serious FAA maintenance violations were revealed.

Right before Rich shut down, they actually had a very decent size presence at LAS. Like ATA, you could see several of their L10's on the ramp at once. There are stil some surviving and are stored at ROW...

Did Rich ever have a 747. I remember seeing the type lose a cowling and various flaming pieces on TO one very hot August day in the 70s (?) All I remember was that the company already had a bad maint rep. No, it wasn't tower.

A quick check of the photo data base revealed Rich International L-1011 at the following locations: CDG, FRA, MAN, DUB, GLA AND LGW.

If you do some searches on a.net you'll find some very interesting information of Rich International along the same lines as Tower Air. Like a previous poster said they had some serious FAA violations going on. They also flew DC8s.

They also had almost daily flights to LAX with L-1011s. They even used the DC-8s there in 1993-94.

Rich International had a contract with former supertour operator SUNTRIPS providing their lift from California to Hawai'i destinations.

I flew on them twice....actually, the service wasn't bad....movies, full meal service, and the famous external camera for takeoff and landings.
They were ex ANA birds, many references to former owner still existed throughout the cabin....such as the safety cards.

Rich was shutdown due to maintenance problems. I heard they even used duct tape on some repairs. Not sure how true it was, but it was shut down.

It was cool at LAS in the mid 90's. TWA flew the L1011 in often, and watching a cold start was AWESOME!!!!! Rich was fun to watch too.

M404...I do not recall Rich ever having 747's. In the 1970's, the choices were quite slim for charter 747 operators as even early 747's, were mostly front line equipment with the majors. ONA/National had some, but these came along in the 1980's. It is possibly Global (GIA), but their Jumbo's also did not come along until the 1980's. The only bona-fide charter operator of 747 equipment I can confirm during the 1970's was World Airways.
