Follow Me Car To The Runway?

Sun Nov 19, 2006 6:39 pm

Hi Everybody!

Just picked up my mother from BUD on Friday. She arrived with 4U from CGN at Terminal 1. I just watched some planes taking of and taxing to the runway. So here is my question, which I am asking myself since some years now. Why is at Terminal 1 in Budapest allways a "FOLLOW ME car" bringing the airplanes prior to take off to the Runway 13R? I have see it so many times now. What is the reason for this?

Thanks for any help.

Best Regards. Tom

I am not local, but telling from the aerial picture on Google Maps, I see that there is no lull-length dedicated taxiway to the end of 13R from T1.

A/c taxiing to the end of 13R either need to backtrack on the runway itself (at least some part) or need to taxy past the hangars etc to the west of 13R (after having crossed 13R in the middle or at the end).
Isn't that the site of the old terminal and now is called Terminal 2, used by some LCC´s ?
That area around looks a bit tight and probably the local airport management uses the "Follow me"-cars as additional precaution, trying to avoid any collisions on the ground.

Just my interpretation ...

Don't forget the additional charge for the follow me cars...

When losing situational awareness, pray Cumulus Granitus isn't nearby !
