Trip Report: PHX-YUL-PHX

Mon Jul 10, 2000 2:30 pm

This trip was a great one, part of it didnt happen as planned.

The night before my mom and I were to leave for Montreal some one from AA calls and says our PHX-DFW flight is cancelled. She tried to get me into DFW on the AA flight that left at 1:25 a.m. I said no thanks, ALL other AA flights were fully booked that day. I said " can you put us on an other Airline?" There was an AWA flight to DFW, but I said no thanks again. In hopes of getting on Air Canada's FLT to YYZ connecting in YYZ then to YUL I asked if she could put us on Air Canada. She did, but it was a code share flight [PHX-ORD-YUL.] PHX-ORD was on UA and ORD-YUL on Aircanada/Canadian. My dad met us in YUL, he was in BOS for a meeting. We dediced to stay one more day and come back on saturday. Since me and my mom bought our tickets with our AAdvantage Miles, we could change w/o charge, my dad had to pay 75 bucks.

June 28th United Airlines 1152
We had to go check in with American AIrlines BEFORE going over to UA, so they could give us UA tickets instead of our AA ones. there was maybe 1 person in line at AA, and they have a 757 that leaves ORD at 7 thats usually full [flow that flight 3 times before] but it was 5:15 am. Then off it is out side again, took the green Terminal bus to T2. The UA line was long. There were a couple agents just typing on their computers not checking any one in..... We get in line and when we are up, we got a very friendly agent. She asked us what happened at American. I said that they had Weather in Dallas. The AA agent that morning said dallas weather. Its funny they know about it 12 hours before the actuall flight [thats when AA called here] and yet the 1:25 a.m. flight still is opperating, do I smell something fishy? Any way, She says its a B737 for our flight and its pretty full and if me and my mom wanted to be together it would have to be in the exit row, other wise there were all middle seats. I said fine! Ive never sat in at exit before. I also ask if it would be easy to change terminals in ORD for our AC/CP flight. She said "yes" then turns to my mom and says "he must be your plane expert!" So its off to the Gate, geez, they had 2 flights leaving at the same time out of the same gate [actually 1 A and 1B]. At the counter they do their job professionally, they have 1 line for the LAX flight, and 1 line for ours, the ORD. They board the LAX flight first, then us, it went by very smoothly and people somewhat waiting for their row to be called. Once in the B737-300 I got setteled in in Row 9, an exit row, AND part of the UA "economy plus." WOW!!! was there a lot of leg room! I could almost have my legs stretched out all the way and barely touched the seat in front of me! Of course I listened to From the cockpit for most of the flight. We taxied to the runway, hear the tower talking to lots of South Wests... AA 460 also opperating PHX-ORD [a 757] took off just before us. THe funny thing is, in from the cockpit, I didnt hear the tower/control centers speak to AA 460 once during the entire flight, and they flew the same route. Perhaps they flew a different flight path? Any way, we take off, and not long after they start drink and breakfast service. The FA started to hand out small boxes that looked like kleenex boxes. It was breakfast, inside was a Bagel, Yogurt, a pack of "granolas" to put in your yogurt and crea cheese. It was pretty good, similar to AA's breakfast Ive had on the same exact route, only AA's had a muffin hot right from the oven. After ever thing is served I listen to my head phones for a while, and a second drink service starts... I asked the FA if she had any extra safety cards as I collect them, and didnt want to take it from the seat, she said "oh its ok, just take it from the seat pocket!" so that was easy. We land in ORD on time at gate C22. Wow, UAs ORD terminal is great. The Underground walkway is AWSOME! It reminded me of something I saw In las vegas before. They have a show on the screen thats kind of up in the sky for lack of better way of saying it. Does any one know what im talking about?

Aircanada Flight 88 ORD-YUL.
This flight boarded from and AC gate and had an AC flight number, but it was a Canadian B737-200 in the half Canadian half AC scheme. One gate agent was very nice, one was extremely rude. We board the Candian B737-200, wow the interior is awsome. Much better the UAs. The cabin seemed brighter. The canadian seats are blue. UAs seats look like they got them off an Arrow bus lines bus. The seat was much more comfortable then UAs. The 2 Female FA's spoke french, so I guessed they were from quebec [they didnt have the france accent.] The male FA also spoke french, but not as well, but he spoke so we could understand. Some lady a few rows before me started to have an argument with the FA. She was mad because she could not have all her bags with her on the plane and in the over head compartment. She was saying [in french, which for me made it enven funnier] " I paid for this ticket, I should be able to have my bags with ME." The FA responded with this coment "this isnt a 747, theres no room for every passenber to bring 2 bags with them." We take off on time, and they served drinks and a "snack." THe snack served in a little basket had a small sandwich, a snikers, frittos, and some carrots. During the flight wich had Canadian crews, you would tell they had a hard time saying AIR CANADA instead of Canadian, it must be difficult. The FA said that because CP had pepsi, and AC coke, it was very confusing because they never know what will be on the plane. We land on time in YUL.

I visited my granparents and family, had a great time in Montreal.

AA flight 327 YUL-DFW
we check in, again a VERY VERY nice agent, she asked us if we lived there and how long, that kind of stuff. I should have asked if it would have been possible to upgrade to FC but didnt. We clear customs very quickly and go eat. I saw an AA B737-800 at our gate, and thought "wow did they have an equipment change?" But then saw that the ORD flight was delayed, so much for my hopes. The MD-80 comes into the gate and they start boarding not long after. Before boarding I ask the gate agent if there were seats in first class and if it would be possible to upgrade into FC. She gives me this nasty look and said "and how to you intend on upgrading?" geez, never mind... We board and take off on time. This MD-80 had the new seats and the more room. The new seats are great with the head rests. Very comfortable. On the way to BOS on AA my dad who knows nothing about aviation said that he noticed the extra room on AAs planes he took to BOS. We take off and not long after they start to serve dinner. It smelled good! the choices were Chicke witn green beens and macarony or linguini Pasta. I had the Pasta which was very very good. My Parents had the chicken wich also look great. with the meal came a small salad, bread and a small desert. A lot of seats were empty on this flight, I would say from from 22to the last row [31] on the 3 seat side there was NO one! on the 2 side, the last 4 rows were empty. I decided to go lay down a bit in an empty row of 3 with a pillow and blanket. I couldnt lay back very well becuase the seat belts stuck into my back, so I sat down, played "game boy" with a Mario game. Saw the sun set. As the sun was still setting I saw there was no one in the exit row on the 2 side. I moved up there, like on UAs plane, LOTS of leg room. I compared the 2 since they both had the more room/economy plus and were exits. They were about the same, AAs might have had 1 or 2 more inches. AAs exit row have those tray tables that come out from the arm rest, I prefer these. As AA serves both coke and pepsi, I have a coke and a pepsi at the same time to see how different they are, they are very alike. WE arrive in DFW on time.

The flight to PHX was not full either, but had more pax then the YUL flight. The flight was scheduled for 10:13 p.m., it was 10:05 and every one was on board! We leave the gate at 10:13 with reverse thrust! wow, this was the first time I had this happened, its funny, the engines turn on, then you feel a small jerk forward and then we reverse. There MD-80 engines are loud! The flight had the new seats and the more room as well. Only a drink service. The nice thing was that at almost ever seat there was a pillow and blanket so one didnt have to get it out of the bin. The FAs on both flights were very friendly! AAs new seats are great, and the more room makes it that much better. My mom over heard this coment after we got off "wow, with the extra leg room I flelt like I was in first class!" AA has done a superb job with the more room and new seats, I hope they keep them for a LONG time.

Well I hope I didnt bore too much, id love to hear your coments.

Great Trip report..
As far as the AA "more legroom" is concerned , I have heard that the removed seats had the result of more legroom only in the first 10 rows...
Did you had the chance to compare the legroom in the back seats?

Best Regards

The part where you heard that the More room was only in the first 10 rows of the aircraft. You heard wrong. The whole Coach Cabin gets the extended seat pitch thus the name "More Room Througout Coach". Just thought id let you know
