By "Pacific Northwest" this article simply means "SEA" as this statement doesn't go for anywhere else.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the article gives the impression that it would be a hard sell as far as the feds are concerned.

I am still scratching my head as to why US airways didn't go after NW? Are union issues really that scary?

Yes, they really are. Considering the labor issues at the new US still haven't all been happily resolved, and that NW is much bigger with labor more militant, I'm not too surprised US hasn't tried something with them.

Maybe the Unions are scary. But I was thinking that that merger would be easier and better. Fleets work, routes work, but some hubs would suffer. In this merger the airline would keep the NWA name but be part of the USAirways Group and not the NWA Corp. (I wish these companies had different names and diversified portfolios).

I never thought of labor issues/unions... Yeah, I guess that would make US getting involved in a larger than life undescribable mess...

Would the PIT and IND focus cities both suffer due to their close proximities to DTW, as I believe that this would result in a huge DTW domestic and int'l hub? I see PHL as being a European gateway... MSP being mostly domestic...
Oh yeah, what about the LBE NW service? NW express provides 3 flights to DTW...

IND would be gone in a snap. DTW probably pulled down to focus city IF THAT, more likely a huge selloff of gates and facilities. It's really not that profitable an O&D base compared to PHL or JFK. There is just no way PHL would be sacrificed for DTW, no matter how nice the terminal is. I just keep scratching my head over PIT, I'm just not getting a good read on it from anyone or anywhere. MSP would be pulled down but kept a regional hub like MEM currently is. Just my take, and I love giving my  twocents
