United's Nose Jobs

Mon Nov 20, 2006 7:57 am

I flew UA 909 AMS-ORD on October 28th and returned on the 908 on November 16th, both on a 763. Both aircraft had a new fresh United livery, but were equiped with a nose in the old livery. BTW at ORD I saw two 767's at the C concourse in this awkward looking way.

I do know sometimes they exchange them with the 777 noses because they are similar, but I was curious why I see this now and then. Do you understand my first disappointed reaction the first time I stood face to face with this aircraft ?!

Un-matched nose paint jobs are nothing new and are not limited to just United. It's an MX issue and sometimes the right radome cone isn't always available.

That's really weird, I know. We see N643UA (No. 6343) at IAD, but I do not remember seeing another one...maybe that other '67 does some other routing which does not include IAD... I have seen Ted planes with the Wolf livery as well...

Wow - that would look pretty odd especially considering the huge disparity in color schemes (old and new). Anyone have any pics of this?

This is not an un-common thing especially with airlines that are going through a c/s change. Often times the ones in stock came back from repair while in the old c/s and do not get updated. There are also quite a few cases where ones in stock are completely white because they are new and have not been painted yet either.

I would think that they would have to be exactly the same to swap noses. Are you sure about that?

The radome (that is the proper name for the "nose") is interchangeable from one 777 to another. They are built that way so is a radome is damaged it can be replaced quickly.

Happens every day. It's just a nose piece that hasn't been repainted yet.

Yes, but you can't take a 777 radome and put it on a 767, as the original poster implied. (or at least that's what I thought he implied).

You also used to see this all the time when Air Wisconsin used to fly for them. A bunch of CRJ's had unmatching radomes.

Actually I believe the nose section of a 777 (from the cockpit windows forward) is identical to the 767. I forget the technical name for the actual section number of the aircraft, however.

Someone else feel free to enlighten or correct.

In that case, I stand corrected. What threw me off is that they interchange them because they are "similar".. They'd have to be the same thing.

I was on a UA 744 (N118UA) from ORD to LAX in June and the livery was still in the old livery, but the left winglet was a replacement and painted in the new livery. Was still that way in October...

I wrote this because there were a few KLM 777 jets flying around with unmatched so- called radome's, probably taken from their 767's. If not similar, at least they are interchangeable. The blue lines on the radome didn't match with the fuselage. To me it looks very poor. Thank God this over very soon !

A short while ago there was a similar topic about KLM nose cone painting.

Thanks KL5147. That was the topic I was refering to. I was wondering before arriving at gate C11 at ORD last wednesday if the plane would have an unmatched radome as we had on the way to O'Hare from Schiphol. I forgot to look if the registrations were similar, but seeing another United a/c with the same unfinished livery, I thought this is quite common. As they fly the T7 as well, It reminded me of the KLM topic....

Now if only United would order some 787's to get rid of the lousy 767's

 Yeah sure

Horizon's aircraft N616QX, flying as Frontier Jet Express, is painted with the Frontier colors and Mountain Goat tail, but has the Horizon scheme radome. It looks very odd, since Horizon has the brown and red cheatlines down the sides, whereas Frontier is all white forward of the front door.

I can't find any pictures of this aircraft with the mismatched nose, so it must have happened since April (the last picture taken of this aircraft).
