Passengers Paying TSA?

Mon Nov 20, 2006 12:43 pm

I was going through the security checkpoint at CLT tonight and the guy behind me was selected for further screening. While I was putting my shoes back on, I saw the TSA agent with something in his hand (looked like a battery or something like that) and then overheard him tell the guy "that will be $20." I thought he was joking at first, but the guy whipped out a $20 bill and paid the TSA agent. I saw the agent take the money, put it in a red bag, fill out some paperwork, and then walk off.

What in the world would a passenger be paying the TSA for???

I think we have a winner.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Surprised we don't hear of this going on more often, with those jokers.

mailing the battery (or whatever) to the person at their destination? that sounds like the most plausible thing and it does happen, better than taking the thing from the person.

He filled out paperwork on his bribe? Give me a break. It's clear that wasn't what happened. The TSA annoys me as much as the next guy, but let's at least use our heads here.

This was no behind the table thing. This was legit. There were far too many people standing around (including real cops) for this to be behind the back. One of the real cops (Charlotte Police) actually watched the whole thing happen. I kick myself now for not asking the guy why he gave them the money.

Whatever it is, I expect that it's above board. I've had bad experiences with TSA all around the country, just like everyone else, but my impression (admittedly based mostly on personal experience) of the CLT specific operation is that they're a class act.

I was traveling internationally in 2003 out of CLT with a rather bizarre and dangerous looking (but completely safe) carryon item, and the TSA folks were extraordinarily helpful both before I arrived and once I arrived. They were more than willing to answer questions in advance of travel and I found the agents to be exceedingly professional once I arrived.

Shipping the item, as others have mentioned, sounds likely to me... but then again I don't have any direct knowledge of the inner workings of the TSA so that's just a guess.

Possibly the best in the country, certainly the best of any airport of CLT's size.
