The alliance will be an interesting question. DL is in Skyteam, US in Star Alliance. Both alliances have other big US airlines: Star UA, Sky CO and NW. I rather see Star because Sky already has two US airlines.

DL with *Alliance. Does that mean that it won't be partnering up with anymore? Cause KL/AF both are in Skyteam. But it will definitely be interesting to see how this turns out...

You would rather see STAR, but I don't think that UA would be all too happy about it. If- and this is a gigantic if- the two companies get to the point of merging (are even allowed to merge), I see it as a SkyTeam airline, as DL was one of the founding members, whereas US just joined STAR within the past 2 or 3 years.

I think Delta will stay in SkyTeam, especially if CO and UA decided to get together. It would cause a slight disadvantage to the former US Airways route network, as FRA was the most served city. Now that CDG would be the main hub, most of the FRA service would be dropped. I remember hearing rumors that US would start PHX-FRA service in 2007-08 once the certificates were merged.

Would UA be unhappy, or would this new strong-hold on the domestic market mean UA shifts more focus towards their international (profit-making) flights? Another possibility- US gets STAR if the DL merger goes through, but UA makes it into SkyTeam if these rumors about CO pan out.

As CLT-FRA and PHL-FRA are *by far* the most profitable routes in the entire US Airways system, and have been so since before the Star Alliance even existed, I can say with complete confidence that they will not be dropped, regardless of which alliance the carrier happens to be in. For that matter, in a merged carrier, CLT-FRA and PHL-FRA would still be the most profitable and third most profitable transatlantic routes, respectively.
I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.

I think the combined would go with SkyTeam, the DL network in entrenched with Skyteam while US is relatively new to Star and really only joined after US/UA failed and they needed a partner.

I think it would be skyteam, since DL has the codeshare with AF. USairways isn't in a close code-share partnership with LH, it's more like what CO has in Skyteam. So, it would be more benefitial going into skyteam. This way, Skyteam would have basically the whole northeast covered, with NYC, EWR, PHL, ATL, MCO...
