Continental Looks To Add 4 More Cities In India

According to report from The Hindu Business Line, Continental is looking to add 4 new cities in India.

The cities are: Bengalooru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai.

However, despite the over exceeding its expectation on its Newark-Delhi run, the new cities in India will not be launched until 2009 or 2010 period when the 787 arrives.

So it seems the 787s won't replace the 767-200ERs like alot of people here thought.... interesting.

More possible 787 destinations: (20 aircraft makes ~9 possible destinations (if served daily)).

Are these two markets from LAX just 220 seater markets--i am sure considerig the number of flights that operate betwwen them it is atleast a 300 seat category market.

it certainly is no doubt that our money maker right now is DEL. I was surprised by Jim's comments on how it would hurt our profits by adding a second daily flight. Maybe we could do BOM instead of a second DEL flight??

CO has 20 firm plus 20 options for 787s, the first 20 will not replace the 767-200s, however they will probably be replaced by the 787s that will exercised beyond 2012.

The first 787 routes for CO will be to Asia from EWR and IAH, such as..

EWR-

Taipei, Osaka, Nagoya, Seoul, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad.

IAH-

Beijing, Seoul etc..

UA could still launch some sort of SFO-BLR or IAD-DEL flight and get in on some of the Indian action, but they seem to be content not doing so.

Sounds likely, but CO doing ALL their Asia flying from EWR isn't all that good. Going to the far east (China, Japan, ect) from EWR cuts off passengers from flight connections to the rest of the U.S. Thats why the far east is best served from SFO or LAX (more logical connections, more possibilities, more revenue).

Why don't CO add more 777s and launch service to those cities? They would be huge money makers for CO!!!

EWR serves the largest market in the US, 25% of the US population lives within 3 hours drive of EWR. It's also a lucrative hub for CO, by focusing on developing their hubs and staying away from point to point flying CO has been able to perform better than it's peers.

They have no hubs on the West Coast, until that changes I would not look for any long haul International flights from the West Coast save an outside chance for a nonstop to Guam.

...Which means that 75% of us DON'T.
Coming from Dallas, for example, I'd much prefer a DFW-IAH-SIN flight than to go thru Newark... and I suspect the other 75% of Americans would, too.

With most people in the USA living east of teh Mississippi flying from New York to Asia is fine, the market is there for a meduim size airplane. 787 were designed for this type of flying, 744 are great from the west coast but not everybody wants to go to California to fly to Hong Kong.

I think KIX and NGO are possiblities but I would not put them high on the list for first 787 routes. Though having non-stop to the East coast is in demand, I wonder if it will have the yield needed to keep the route profitable. If CO were to enter these markets, it would create competition that NW doesn't have. Better for me. sadly I have no reason to fly to the East Coast, I am from Wisconsin. But that would mean more 787s to photo,

India is booming economically and there are huge investments from US companies as well as a great entrepreneurship in the country spurring the need for more service. Japan just doesn't have the entrepreneurship to demand even a very nice long-thin route.

Korea....underserved and will get CO non-stop from IAH and EWR.

I never thought this. I always thought the 787 was going to do for Transpac/Asia what the 767 did for Trans-atlantic/Europe. But one could abuse a 787 for a 767-200ER mission.

But I wonder if EWR can handle an explosion of new expansion. I thought it was starting to ache in a very ORD way.

I dont expect CO to fly heavily to Asia at first. But do expect the main concentration of 787's to be in EWR

Well, LAX used to be a big CO hub, years ago. Currently, it's the 4th largest city they serve. So, Trans-pacific from LAX is possible. T6 does have 787 gates.

Denver used to be a hub too, don't look for DIA-NRT from CO unless they merge with UAL.

CO closed their Denver hub in 1995 and moved the aircraft to EWR and IAH, they shut down their Long haul International flights from Seattle, Los Angeles and Honolulu in 1994 and moved the DC-10s and 747s to EWR to launch new Trans-Atlantic routes.

Both were profitable moves, they only scenario under which CO grows outside EWR, IAH, CLE or Guam is through a merger.

lets say this was a possibility with the routes being approved , would they send the bird back and forth HKG-DEL-HKG
or would they send the 777 from EWR-HKG then HKG-DEL and finally DEL-EWR
and the same thing for the other 777 doing EWR-DEL DEL-HKG HKG-EWR

CO ordered 2 777s in 2005 with delivery in 1st quarter of 2007.

Excellent, this is good news about Continental. They are my preffered US-based carrier and perhaps a flight on them in the near future to the other side of the world is in order...


ps: just had a great flight with them flying MKE-IAH-TUS

Connecting at EWR to Asia is not that bad. The flight from EWR-NRT is only 10 minutes longer than the flight from IAH-NRT, Flying from many places in the midwest and south would not be a big deal.

In addition I do not believe that CO will start service out of LAX as they mantain the strongest hub and spoke model out of all airlines and also rely on connecting flights. LAX is not their hub, and only non-hub routes are to Hawaii and Mexico, therefore a domestic market would have to be created for transpacific travel.

EWR will get more 787s for service to eastern Europe (i.e. Budapest, Athens, Vienna, etc.) and Asia/ mid east service, and possibly Africa if within the market at the time.

Houston will get the 787s to major Asian destinations already served at EWR in addition to major European destinations such as Frankfurt and Madrid,

In addition I do not see four cities to India just yet. Other destinations will be a primary priortiy, then possibly one destination at a time (i.e. starting with Mumbai in addition to Delhi, and adding more as time goes on)

In regards to ewr term C reaching capacity, im not sure if many people are aware but we will be moving all mainline flights back to terminal C and express is going to term A. I'm not sure if this will help the situation, but just thought i would see what the response is.
