Meeting Arriving Passengers At The Aircraft Gate?

Wed Nov 22, 2006 8:25 am

I have recently come back from trips in Australia and America, and noticed that family and friends were meeting passengers at the aircraft gate!!

This means they have to go through security still obviously.

How come this is allowed, and not allowed in the UK?

Is it because of security?

Because if it is, I am really suprised that you can do it in the States...surely security is tighter in the USA compared to the UK?

It is not allowed in the USA unless one is meeting an unaccompanied child, an infirm relative or some other special circumstance. Only one person is allowed to accompany them to the gate and the escort requires a gate pass obtained from a counter agent of the airline on which the person they are meeting or accompanying is traveling. Sometimes groups of people coordinate their arrival times and wait at the gates for others to arrive before proceeding outside of security. Maybe that's what you saw.

Imagine how bad the security line would be if they let everyone through??!!

Could you imagine how crowded the concourses at some airports (like ATL) would be if they still allowed non-ticketed people past security?

It would be like pre-9/11 days. When you never knew who was traveling and who was just there.

You see how long and snaking the security check lines are at major UK airports. Imagine double or triple the numbers, with freinds and famiy?

No I definately saw a family come through security, met the Father, and went back out through security to the Exit.

It was at the Brisbane Domestic Terminal...if that makes any difference?

It also happened at Adelaide Airport as well.

I was staying with an Australian family, and I asked them about it, and they said it is allowed.

NW allows both parents to escort a UM.

In the old days, this is the way it was. (By "old days" I mean like 15 years ago; not that far in the past.) There were always big crowds of people waiting at gates. They had to go through security, but that was no big deal back then - it was just an x-ray machine and most greeters weren't carrying anything anyway.

I regularly fly AA between STL and BNA and there are lot of soldiers on this route flying home to BNA. And almost everytime that I have a flight with a few of them there are family members waiting in the gate area for their family member. I don't know if its just BNA that lets families and friends of men and women serving our country into the gate area.

It has only been since September 11, 2001 that you could not meet arriving passengers or say goodby to departing passengers at the gates in ATL.

If the person is escorted by a badged person at some airports then they can get through security with no problems.

9/11 changed all the rules for U.S. airports unless issues as mentioned in previous posts occur.

Note the words if they still allowed. That implies the knowledge that non-ticketed passengers are currently not allowed into the "sterile" area of the airport except under certain conditions.

Here in Oz anyone can go through security at domestic terminals and go to the gate. Nobody checks boarding passes until you get to the gate. A lot of people meet family etc at the gate.

Too bad domestic terminals are pretty boring places for spotting (QF 743s aside), otherwise I'd be doing that more often.

Curiously, the security lines are still not very long!

I think even if 9/11 hadn't happened saying goodbye before security is better.

You no longer have the aunt, uncle, 2nd cousin once removed, brothers, sisters and parents all going to the gate to see off the one kid flying off to the coast to go to school (I flew out of MSP for years). It was just a hassle. First you had the 120 some people waiting to get on the DC9 (NW) and then all their relatives seeing them off. Just too many people. Those with long transits might want to sit and having to deal with Aunt Bitty who is just there to see off Niece Suzy for a seat is just annoying.

Back in the before time at MSP when everyone in the world went through security, the halls between gates were so crowded that one couldn't move. I remember having to make some tight transfers around 5:00pm from what is now gate C6 to what is now gate G21 (pre concourse bridge) and dodging more people than I would have liked.

Even now some concourses can be hard to move around in as they are too narrow for the amount of pax traveling and transiting.

That all being said. When I come out of security at MSP, I like seeing my family but that space is just too small for family and getting ones bags. Wish I could pick up my bags before exiting the secure area like I do in Japan.

The one thing I am curious about is what the thread starter is saying about Australia. Can one go to the gate in Australia? I would think that this is not possible.

Yes, at domestic terminals in Australia, Joe Bloggs and his wife can go and meet, greet or say goodbye to whoever they choose. It's only at boarding that your boarding pass is presented.

I might add that even though it's possible to do this in Oz, not many people do. You only really see a couple of people at the most meeting each flight. I've met relatives off at the gate when I've been the only person to do so.

IMHO the exorbitant cost of airport parking has ensured people stay away from airports if they aren't travelling ...

As I said before, the security lines are usually very short. Maybe I fly at odd times but I've never queued up for more than 30 seconds at any Australian domestic terminal.

My point is (and was) that five years ago you could pass through the metal detectiors and go to the gate to meet or say goodbye to a passenger. It wasn't that crowded then so there is no reason why it would be crowded now.

Now I will go crawl back under my rock.

Australia...the last bastion of gate goodbyes. Impressive.

Was there a post 9/11 discussion about limiting this practice? Or was it just deemed safe enough that anyone could go to a domestic gate and wish someone off or meet someone?

Yeah its still bad even with the ticketed pax rule. I am tired of having pax snare at me when I have to squeeze to the front of the line, it really makes me laugh. I know of a Captain one time who got snared at, so he kindly walked to the back of the line, delayed the flight, and then told the pax "I am sorry but this flight is delayed due to your crew waiting at security", so obviously people missed connections and stuff....
