Why Did Virgin Drop Their Signature Tail Design

Wed Nov 22, 2006 8:01 pm

Was it necessary? the modified new legible ''Virgin'' logo could have been included in the previous framed tail, infact there wasnt even need to change it, the scribbled looking original was much better. Yes the new look will grow on us but the one below was classier.

Fully agree with you, 777way. The new signature is an improvement, looks slik although the new red tail/rear design is less distinctive (even a bit boring and way too small on the fuselage) than its previous framed one.

I think Virgin deleted the alu mica paint because it's one of the most expensive paint processes (a number of primers and finishings are needed: weight!) and extremely ineffective during maintenances/repairs. Not too bad that new white although white could have been replaced for an off-white or plain cool grey with a bit red design on the front, roof or belly.

No doubt that the new Virgin Atlantic paint design is less spectacular than their previous, 'silver', livery. 'Less is more' they say, but this new livery has too less to be more and cannot be qualified as a successor to its previous one... Very pitty, because Virgin is a very innovative and 'hip' brand!

Although I like the new colours I will miss the silver and messy logo. The new colours look fine it's not Euro white but still boring. It still looks good just not as classy.

Well it's all about the money ain't it? So why spend more lugging around heavier paint jobs? But then again Sir Dick, has this thing for 4 engines, and that is two to many! How much would he save if he went to an A333/773 fleet?

They are also rebranding the brand. Virgin Atlantic's tails are now going to be looking like Virgin America's tails. They are creating a uniform livery for brand recognition. Will be interesting to see if Nigeria, Blue, Pacific etc. follow this path as well. I saw the new scheme on G-VRED last week at JFK and it looked really good. The new scheme grew on me.

I like the new look for it looks like it bubbles out to you! It looks like if you poke at the tail its gonna pop. I will miss the old look though! I liked the silver color!

They will for sure, as for brand identity the last livery did more for Virgin's image than any of their previous schemes, it even made the subsiodiaries stand out and never did it seem they're not part of the Virgin group, so looks like someone made a bafoon of Branson and in the bargain made some bucks.

It looks good now, but VS are continually changing/modifying the cs in some way. I wish they would just choose one, and stick to it! It's often difficult to see which cs is the current one when you have a few VS birds together, as there are often some variation from one to another!  Smile
