Swissair MD11 Experiences

Tue Jul 11, 2000 12:43 am

Who had ever flown on an Swissair MD11?
Do you remember the Registration Number (e.g.HB-IWA),
or something special??
I' m gonna fly this summer to Atlanta on a MD11, and I'm a real great fan of the Swissair MD11.

I have flown many times on Swissair's MD 11, to JFK, ATL, LAX, ORD, SIN. I am also a great fan of it. I love the aircraft and I will miss it very much in 2004 when they are gone from SR.
I don't know all the registrations anymore, but I know I have flown on the IWF (Vaud) to ATL (I think 1997) which has crashed as SR 111 near Halifax. Thinking of this I always get a strange feeling   .

I think it's the A340-600s. I will miss the MD-11s with the comfy 2x4x3 config on the JFK-Geneva route. I'll be also sad because The Swissair MD-11 fleet could not retire in peace due to loosing one plane on Setempber 2, 1998 off of Nova Scotia due to electrical problems with the plane's on-board entertainment system with the defective Kapton wiring killing all 229 people on board.

At the moment SR has ordered 11 A 340-600. But they have to replace 19 MD 11. I don't know if they order more 340 or perhaps more 330-200 (at the moment they have 16 on order, 13 in use).

Didn't they clear the IFE system from fault in the SR111 crash - focus is now on the map lights in the cockpit

As a reminder, no speculation on air crashes unless some real report is out. And, on some we'll never know the reason.

Virgin A340:
howcome you know the reason and the Canadian CAB does not? Was it the Kapton wiring? Really? Did it spark? Or was the melting of the cables a cause of the fire due to other reasons?

777X:
well, the problem is, that in IWF there were no signs of burn in the insulation behind the F/Os reading lamp.

In short, they don't know what the problem was yet, and anything else is pure speculation.

But the aircraft are nice to fly (especially Business and the new First Class), and service is usually very good. I used to fly them a lot, but my usual route nowadays has a A330 on it, wich is very nice too.

I have flown this year with HB-IWM to LAX, and back with the first SR MD-11, HB-IWA. I like the MD-11, although it looks a little bit weird with the middle engine.

The MD-11 will be replaced with A340-600, of which 11 have been ordered so far. But with still some 10+ options and some options for the A332 I'm sure, we will see some more orders of one of those aircraft.

I've flown several times with Swissair MD-11's. I like this aircraft! (registrations I can't remember, but I also flew SRAsia and that means HB-IWN or G).

Why does Swissair don't buy some small Airbuses 340 (200/300 versions)? This aircraft would be the right size for longhaul flights with few traffic.

I've flown on HB-IWB(Graubunden) to ZRH and HB-IWC (Schaffhausen) back to LAX, interesting that I got to fly on the second and third MD-11's delivered in that order..

You're gonna have a great time flying on that plane, if you're flying economy make sure to pick a seat behind the wing (rows 30 or behind) that way you can get a nice view of the flaps and such.

With the HB-IWC is funny story. HB-IWC is named by the city of Schaffhausen and in the city of Schaffhausen there is an famous watch company with the name IWC (International Watch Company).

hello!!
two years ago I flew on a MD-11 of swissair from genève to new york JFK. Flight was delayed 8 hours on the way out. I don't remember the registration, but it was the "canton de Fribourg".
On the way back, it was the HB-IWF "canton de Vaud", which crashed near halifax 3 weeks later.
It was my two better flights!
greetings

I just had the pleasure to fly once with a SR MD11. It was in 1995 (I think...don't have my notes handy here) between Zurich and Geneva. The aircraft came from Singapore and I was happy to get on it for the 45min domestic leg. Service on board was extremely friendly and we even got a little breakfast plus cookies plus plus plus..... In fact the SR crew offered more on that short hop than other airlines do on flights of several hours (NW A320, 5h between Memphis and San Francisco : 1 Muffin only....).

When I flew to JFK on 2nd September 1998 with KLM, we taxied along 2 SR MD-11's which were loaded at that time. One was the flight to Zurich while the other, HB-IWF, was supposed to go to Geneva... it was a true shock to read the next day it had crashed....

Brgds,

Thomas

ZRH, interesting note on HB-IWC, apart from that and HB-IOC (A321 named Lausanne, home of the international olympic committee IOC) is there any other plane who's name is related to the registration?

Thanks SR 117, I did not know about HB-IOC (Lausanne). It is funny. What do you mean, do they do this on purpose or is it only by chance? I will "investigate" if there are other registrations like this.

An other one I know: The former 747-300 "Geneva" had the registration HB-IGE, GE is the official abreviation for the Canton of Geneva.

I flew on HB-IWE in August 1991 from ZRH-JFK. There was a last minute equipment change from a 747-357, but a good one for me. IWE was the latest MD-11 delivered to SR fleet back then, and this was one of its first revenue flights. The plane was brand new, smelled like it too - very pleasant flight.

HB-IWD had the engine failure in LAX.

There is not much to choose between the various SR MD-11s. Maybe a few interesting details ...

HB-IWR, IWS, IWT and IWU are the ones which were acquired from LTU last year.

Most of the fleet was delivered (to SR AND LTU) in 1991/92. IWN came in 94, IWO, IWP and IWQ in 97.
