UA: 733 Or A319

Thu Nov 23, 2006 12:25 pm

One of the flights I'm going to be on with United just got changed from an A319 to a 733 (flight 360; ORD-IAD). Both have CH. 9 right? Which aircraft is better, nicer, etc.? Thanks!

Yes, both have Ch 9.
Nicer? It matters what kind of 737. On UA, I find the 737 to be nicer. You could find more in archived Polls Prefs.

In my opinion, it is the A319. It is quieter, wider, and seems to be overall more comfortable. Just my opinion, though.

If i remember correctly, the 319 has video, although its x-many rows between the screens while the 733 only has audio. besides that, there is no other difference I can remember except the obvios that one is better then other and Ch.9 is pilot discretion so just hope you have a nice crew upfront who don't mind flippin that switch.

Never flown UA, but my friend is a Captain on the A319/320 at UA and says the 320/319 is better. The 737 is nice but the 319 is wider making it more comfortable depending on which class.

I will say that the A319s are reasonably better than the 737s. The A319s aren much newer and feature United's new seat that is in place on most of the fleet. The economy seats have headrests, which are nice. The 737s are getting old and aren't very nice inside. They need to be refurbished, but instead are slowly leaving the fleet as more 70 seat ExPlus RJs enter the fleet.

That's a weird response. When comparing the A319 to the 73G, then they are similary, but the 733s are a good 10 years older.

Too bad you didn't get the option of flying on a 777. I know UA has flown the 777 among other wide bodies between its hubs in the past.

To answer your question, the A319 in my opinion is nicer. Nicer cabin, IFE, and at least 10 years younger compared to the 733.

All UA mainline aircraft are capable of Channel 9. The Captain's discretion will dictate if Channel 9 is music or ATC.

Personally, the A319 is more comfortable. The seat width is very nice. Also, the A319 has audio and video IFE. The 733 only has audio.

Are you seated in Economy, Economy Plus or First?

First on the 733 can either be good or so-so. Some of the 733's and 735's are still in the former Shuttle configuration. That means, only two lavatories, no ovens and no drink carts. First class meals on a former Shuttle aircraft are served on black plastic tv-dinner style trays. No ovens means no fresh baked chocolate chip cookies or warm rolls/food. Expect a cold sandwich or cold salad, ice cold rolls, and a packaged cookie. IIRC, there is no refrigeration on the former Shuttle aircraft either, so don't ask for a drink without ice. There's been horror stories of people getting sick from warm mayonnaise sauces on sandwiches. This is especially true if you're boarding from an airport without catering services. For example, if a Shuttle aircraft does a ORD-MHT-ORD run, all the meals for both legs are boarded in ORD. So, the folks on MHT-ORD will get room temperature food.

If you're in economy on a Shuttle aircraft, the flight attendants will be serving drinks by hand. They have WN style plastic drink trays that hold a dozen or so cups, but most flight attendants tend not to use it. Hence, drink service is painfully slow.

Non-Shuttle 733's and 735's have three lavatories, ovens, and drink carts.

Economy Plus has an inch or two more of legroom on the A319 vs. the 733 as well.

If you're interested, you can tell if you're on a former Shuttle 733 by looking at the seat maps. Seatguru.com has the Shuttle configuration labeled as "US 2." On the Shuttle aircraft, seats 23A and 23B exist, and 10A and 10F don't exist.

Have a good flight!

So wait UA's 737's have no video? I am going to be on one next week from ATL-DEN. Then I will be on a 319 from SFO-ATL.

So check back next week and I can give you a first hand answer of which was better IMO.

Oh yeah does UA Express have CH 9? I can't remember.

I am almost certain there is no video on UA 737's. Although it has been many years since I flew on one. All I can say is make sure you bring something to read!

I did have the option of a 763, but the times didn't work for me. I caught it on the return trip though!

There is no video on UA 733's, just audio. I've flown on two recently...an ex-Shuttle plane and a regular one. The 737's have the old 1980's style seats in them, but they are comfortable. I was also on a UA 319 recently, and it was avery nice flight as well. The Airbii have the drop down LCD screens every few rows. I've never really noticed the "wider" cabin on the A319/320 series aircraft to be honest. I'll take a Boeing over an Airbus because I think the ride is better, but both are quality aircraft. If you prefer new planes, go with the 319. If that doesn't matter to you, go wth the 37. They won't be around forever.

Yes they will, maybe not the 733 but I'm willing to bet there will be plenty of 737's around at least 30 years from now. The MD80's however will not, which is why I try to enjoy the Mad Dog flights while I can.

Just my 2cents, but while the A319 is newer and has video (which is nice) and is also quieter, the seats UA put on their A319/320 are kinda stiff and funky, and not terribly comfortable. You can even consult seatguru.com - it even notes the less than ideal seats UA put in the 319/320. That said, they aren't terrible, and it is likely a matter of preference, however, while I find everything else about UA's A319s to be better, the 733 has nicer seats.

For me, defiantly the A319. The A319 is much quieter and wide. I feel more comfortable in the A319 than any other narrow body aircraft. UA's A319 and B737 both have Chan. 9, last time I checked. In addition, I think that most of UA's A319 have IFE and the B737 doesn't. Airbus A319 is IMO better.

Apparantly the only aircraft in UA fleet that don't have channel 9 are the CRJs and ERJs. When I was flying UA in June from LAX-DTW via ORD, I was on an A320 red-eye flight to ORD and then onto UAs oldest B733 for the ORD-DTW sector. I found the B733 to be a very big let down, otherwise UAs service was excellent. The B733 was a very cold flight as I could feel air coming throu the window frame. That B733 is about 20 years old thou.

The 737 is a fine aircraft, though as mentioned, UA's have the older looking interiors. I haven't really noticed the seat width difference, at least on the US fleet.

While the A319 has video, I don't know that it would matter that much for a ORD-IAD flight (besides the safety video). That flight is only about 75 minutes. How much video programming would there be anyway?

Well given that UA already has a large number of A320's I would say that is the logical choice.

Sometimes NBC in flight is shown on these short flights. If I were you I would take the A319, newer, nicer cabin.

I have 54 segments on UA this year. I personally like the 733 better because the audio system doesn't reset all the time switching channel 9 back to channel 2, you then have to press the channel button and volume button forever to get it back to where you want it only to have to do the whole process over again. This seems to mostly take place during start and taxi. ATC seems to be on more on the 319/320. The 319/20s have no music option on Channel 9. 757s,733,735s, and 763s all have the channel 9 option or stupid music. On average out of 10 flights ATC is on about 7 out of 10 flights. It always pisses me off when it isn't since that is the only reason I fly UA. Well, that and being able to getting a 777 while domestic flying.

Have a good trip and hope ATC is on for you.

I have flown many mainline and shuttle/ex-shuttle UA 733/735s. I have not however been on a UA 319. I have flown many UA 320s so I'm guessing the difference is negligable at best with the 320s possibly being just slightly older yet IIRC they have the same interior and seats. The seats in the 737 fleet are definitely worn and are 80s style yet decently comfortable. If I were you, I would go for the window seat in the exit row because IIRC there is no seat directly in front of it giving you quadruple the legroom. The tray table is in the armrest though so the seat is a pinch narrower. The interior of UA's 320 series is much more modern and the seats do have winged headrests however they are thinner and less padded making them less comfortable IMO. I am suprised that there are no scheduled 777s operating ORD-IAD. I used to frequently get a domestic 777 w/o the Personal IFE from DEN-ORD and SFO/LAX-DEN. Anyway, enjoy your flight rehgardless and be sure and spoil us with a trip report upon return.

I've flown A320s, A321s, and all models of the 737... I've never noticed a difference in width. I think the reality is an extra inch on either side, hardly noticeable. The A321 is also the loudest airplane I've flown in awhile, excepting the 732.

The only real difference from a passenger's point of view is that the A319/20 has video and the 737 doesn't. Considering the flight is approximately 1:45 ORD-IAD there is no movie anyway; maybe a rerun of seinfeld. As long as the captain turns on channel 9, you'll be fine. If he doesn't, do what I do: Take a nap.  zzz
