JAL Adds Mexicana Codeshare On YVR-MEX

Fri Nov 24, 2006 1:45 am

Starting 01DEC, JAL will add a new codeshare route with MEXICANA.

JL5788 YVR1300-2025MEX x14 319

The codeshare, currently on one-way basis, will complement JAL's 2 weekly YVR-MEX on Day 14.

How is JL'S MEX service doing anyway? And why is this codeshare only one way?

MEXICANA arrives YVR 1120 and JAL departs at 1115. Basically 24hrs. They already have few similar ones at LAX to some Mexican cities, so probably they want to avoid it or something.

Still in effect, since AM place its code on JL's 2 weekly YVR-MEX.

The ultimate question is when will Mexicana try and get service to Japan like AM.

Wonder if MX will join an alliance sometime soon.

Never! Considered how slot restricted and all difficulties and hassle for AM was to get into NRT... more over, AFAIK, AM has a 3rd slot in case they want to increase operations and that's about it!

MX expansion is on a different route compared to AM's.

Never is a pretty strong word to you. Especially if you limit Japan to NRT. In 2009 the second runway extension will be completed and more long-haul slots will be available. Many of those I think will go to new carriers wanting to serve over existing carriers. As I said before don't limit things to NRT. Japan doesn't equal Tokyo. NGO had tried to get AM's service but NRT gave them slots which are more desired over over other destinations. Of course serving NRT is more beneficial for an airline but if you want to get your foot in the door it is better to start service to Japan and then hope that it puts you in better standing for getting slots when they become available. This is why EK serves NGO and KIX but not NRT....foot in the door. MX could and will have to expand in more especially with LCCs poping up in Mexico. Also the demand for flying to South America from Asia is growing quickly and it would wise for an airline like MX to tap into it. They already have offices all over the world including NRT and HKG.

As much as I would like to see MX in JP as well as other destinations I'm not holding my breathe...for that to happen. What I DO expect is MX in China before Beijing 2008. Unfortunately too, MX is not EK... they don't have that money on reserves as well as it is now PRIVATELY owned, I'm sure Grupo Posadas (MX owners) can't do what AM as a government airline is doing and expanding abroad as probably should have done several years ago!

At this stage, the route network between MEXICANA and AeroMexico is pretty much complementing on e another except some trunk routes have competition. Otherwise, they're pretty much "1 single" airline, to be exact.

That is pretty much how things were when both companies and their respective regional airlines (Aerolitoral and Aerocaribe, later Click) were under the control of CINTRA, the state-run holding company. MX has been sold to private hands ever since (the Azcarraga family, owners of the Posadas hotels group, which include Caesar Park, Fiesta Americana, The Explorean hotels, among others). Both MX and AM have since then been diversifying their route network, albeit they still keep numerous codeshare flights and the ability to mutually give FF miles or kilometers to eachother's pax in their respective flights. This long, forceful honeymoon is coming to an end.

What other OneWorld members does MX codeshare with? I know they codeshare with AA. How about the other carriers?

And QF also has a codeshare in place with MX.

There was also an announcement long time ago that MX was to codeshare with CX but it is not in the GDS yet.

That will only leave BA, AY and EI.

Hong Kong and Mexico reached a new bilateral deal last week, so probably CX/MX is on the horizon soon.

Indeed, time ago it was announced the codeshare between CX and MX, also if i remember right MX can check in luggage to CX flights.

MX has no codeshare with BA, only the i-ETKT so MX can check inn passengers traveling with MX and BA if they have an E-TKT-

MX right now has no plans to enter any alliance -oneworld, etc- , also for Asia hopefully we will MEX-TIJ/MXL-PVG next year if everything goes as planned, also maybe KIX will be a good option, but really expensive.

Saludos

In addition to JAL codeshare on MEXICANA's YVR-MEX, MEXICANA will codeshare on JAL's YVR-NRT.

JL012/MX3849 NRT-YVR-MEX
JL011/MX3848 MEX-YVR-NRT

JL018/MX3851 NRT-YVR

JAL's one-way YVR-MEX codeshare will expand to round-trip codeshare when 2007 Summer timetable went into effect.

I think this should be the point of entry for Mexicana in the Far East. They would never need to regret having picked up China as their gateway to the huge and endless Asian market.
