Future Of The 747-8 And 747-7?

Fri Nov 24, 2006 2:53 am

I was wondering if anyone had an update on the future of the 747 program? I know that Emirates has been talking about a new version of the 747 with Boeing. Do we know where that program stands? Will there be a freighter version of the 747-7? Also, does Boeing expect and orders for the 747-8I this year?

Their is no update of the 747 program, because Boeing believe in the 748 and their future in many airline fleets. A smaller 747 with a greater range is available today and do very well for Boeing and many airlines, the B777-300ER.

Boeing does´t expect an order this year, but rumors say´s that Boeing has found an launch costumer for their B747-8. I

whats a 747-7??? are you referring to the "shorter" 747-8I (aka as the original 747-8I as opposed to the recently proposed 747-8I which is the same length as the 747-8F)

Yea I was wondering the same thing. The 747-8i hasn't even been close to finalization and we already have people talking about a "747-7" lol.

Boeing is in talks with Emirates over a version of the 747. This aircraft was to be the same length as the -400 but have greater range. I thought that they were calling this version of the 747 the 747-7? If I'm wrong I'm sorry!

the "original" pax version of the 747-8 is longer than the 744 (but shorter than the 747-8F). This appears to be the version EK is interested in but other potential customers want one the same length as the F version.

I thought the shorter 748I is being unofficially dubbed the 747-8IER and not as 747-7.

It is highly likely the 747-8 will be the final version of this venerable family.

EK would like at least 300nm range then the new specification offers. It is highly likely Boeing will be able to meet this request with the new specification, but even then, I remain hesitant to believe EK would order it.

The 747-700, also known as the 747-X, was never presented for sale. There would have been a freighter version if it had, however.

They seem to feel the likelihood is less and less, though they remain confident that a sufficient order to formally launch the program will occur in 2007.

The 748i will, in my opinion, only be produced in one length. It seems to me that EK was not concerned with the length as much as they were with the range.

If Ek is happy to limit the pax load in each class to what was planned for the original 748i then Boeing should be fairly well along with reaching EK's target - especially the LAX target. I would guess that Boeing will be able to make EK happy within a reasonable time frame, leaving it p to EK to put their money where their mouth is.

Every improvement they make on the 748i for an airline like EK will only enhance the performance of the plane for the other airlines buying it. Throw in the advancements in technology that might be available over the next 10 - 15 years and it might be difficult for anyone to put this old gal to bed, even when Y3 is heading to production. Maybe in another 40 years, but only if A or B comes out with a front loading replacement.

No.. wait, the 748-Coupe. I thought of the 747-Coupe, but we've seen that as the 747sp  Wink

I'm going to hazard a guess that it means "nose-loading cargo door" for the freighter version.

Though pre-seating pax on palletized seating/overhead sections and then just rolling them in and out of the nose would probably speed up loading/unloading a great deal.  Silly

ah, but why go through all that trouble when you have "self loading cargo"?  Wink
