Future Services At LRU

Sun Nov 26, 2006 3:54 am

Las Cruces is the second largest city in New Mexico, and its population is still growing. The airport authority at LRU has been striving to get commercial jet service. However, past commercial turboprop services have flopped there. Mesa Airlines has discontinued service to ABQ a while ago. Westward Airways and Rio Grande Air have ceased operations altogether. IMO it is quite odd that the second largest city in New Mexico does not have any commercial air service. Some smaller cities, such as Santa Fe and Farmington, DO have commercial air service. Some might say that Las Cruces is too close to El Paso, however, the same argument could be made for Santa Fe. Although most people who live in Santa Fe prefer to use ABQ, the people are at least able to keep their service to Denver on Great Lakes Airlines alive. Why wouldn't Las Cruces be able to do the same for their airport?

Yes, I know that I have talked in the past about future services at SAF and FMN, but LRU is an interesting spot, because as the population at Las Cruces grows, the more and more the people will be willing to support commercial aviation.
