A380 In Sydney

Sun Nov 26, 2006 2:57 pm

I'm going to take a day off work this week to see the A380 in Sydney. The local media have all but ignored the event to date so I'm very light on details. If anyone else out there plans to do the same next week, I'd appreciate it if you could share any details you have (particularly good observation points).  Smile

A380 arrives here in Sydney on Tuesday, don't know what time, but I will be watching closely, as I want to see it. I believe it's in Jo'burg right now, so if the South Africans could let us know when it leaves, that'd be ideal!!!  biggrin

380 was scheduled to leave here 8am local (30 min ago) which is 5pm SYD, flying time was 11-odd hours when I did it 5 years ago... I guess that makes it around 4am Tuesday arrival? The polar route they are taking may change that flying time somewhat though so don't crucify me if it's wrong!

A news from last week's Sydney Morning Herald mentioned the A380's scheduled to land at AEST 11:00am Tuesday. Better to be there earlier ?img border=0 src="/discussions/graphics/smilies/cool.gif" alt="Cool">

According to Sydney's weather forecast it's gonna be Northeast wind around midday so expecting RWY34L....Gee....that means we won't be able to take the obervation deck at Intl Terminal..... crying

The shortest distance between JNB and SYD is 11,044 km (5,963 nm/6,862 mi) and with an average ground speed of 460 kts it will take 12:58 to complete the distance. This great circle route will go over Kerguelen Islands (Fr.) and the southern most part would have been around 52° south. In other words MSN 002 must be flying 38° extra south to cross over the south-pole. By measuring JNB-NZSP-SYD, the total distance is 13,654 km (7,211 nm/8,298 mi), and with an average of just above 400 kts, the distance will be covered in 17h50m.

AIB402 left JNB this morning at 6:10 GMT (17:10 Sydney time) and with ETA 11:00 local time Sydney (00:00 GMT) - planned flight duration 17h50m.

different flight path altogether...Vancouver flights nonstop would go north of the Hawaiin Islands, Lax-Syd goes quite south of them. put it this way, when they do pass each other they'll be quite far apart and it won't be 530pm at that particular point...more likely to be very early in the morning Hawaiin time.

No, it won't be very early in the morning hawaiian time, unless you know something i don't about time zones and . It would be about 8:30PM hawaiian time, but we'd "pass" well before the A380 gets close to hawaii. granted, I'd need eyesight that could see about 350 nm at sunset, but that's a whole different issue.

Anyway, it was just a joke.

The eastbound SAA 744 flight gives an average ground speed of 508 kts. If one fly via the south pole (Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station) on the way down you fly due south and thereafter turn due north in direction SYD - therefore the wind factor can be neglected.

Right then which of you bastards is the joker?!  biggrin  I get to the airport at 10:20am this morning, earlier than the 11:00am expected arrival time to be told that the A380 arrived at 9:00am and was parked at the gate!!!

So, we cross the road to have a look, and sure enough, there she was parked at the gate.

I'm told that she will depart at 12pm tomorrow, but given todays performance, I might just arrive at 9am just in case someone decides to take the piss again!!!!

Left early from JNB due to forecast high temperatures !!!

No offence to Airbus, but what a joke, isn't the whole idea of the flights to see how the aircraft performs over certain routes, in all conditions.

Now I know it took a longer route than would normally have been the case, but JNB/SYD is done by 744's with what appears to be few problems and the distance travelled should have been well within its payload range capabilities, so the idea of leaving early to avoid hot weather, or any weather for that matter would appear to make the whole exercise a bit of a farce.

Having said that, I was out there to see the ugly bugger arrive and will see it go tomorrow.

someone is having a lend if it was leaving early due to high temps, highest it got in Joburg yesterday was 25C and that was at 1445pm local, at 10am which was the original departure time the temp was 20c.

if that's hot then i'd hate to think what the 37c is classified as that we had here on sunday.

Well if it was that cool in JNB then obviously it wasn't to do with worries about field performance, at least I hope not.

Strange thing with the arrival time it ended up with, was that it put it smack bang in the middle of peak hour, a great way to make friends with ATC, give then a bit of extra work to do,especially with the increased seperations required at that time of day.

Another reason to take what pilots say with the odd grain of salt, good mates though that some of them are.

Does anyone know how long it was in the air or any other details of the 'mission' as last time I looked at the special Airbus site it was dead useless, had no live images, and no flight tracking.

I've just returned from the airport and my first (in the flesh) A380 spotting. It was parked adjacent to 3 Qantas 747-400's and a 737-400. All I can say is WOW. I didn't have a true appreciation for the wingspan until I was up-close. If it wasn't the for $13p/h parking fees, I could have sat there all night.

Not that much tail wind for the flight - average ground speed for the full flight was just above 460 kts. Unusual for the south pole this time of the year; it was low pressure yesterday (~975 mbar), but it was filling in (pressure going up). I suspect MSN 002 had a light tailwind in to the pole point and light headwind out again.

Jan Smuts Airport was renamed Johannesburg International not long after South Africa became a true democracy, and was recently renamed again to OR Tambo International after Oliver Tambo, a stalwart of the struggle against apartheid. I was joking about being hauled off to jail of course, it hasn't been Jan Smuts for over 10 years but there are still road signs with this name and if you refer to "Smuts" everyone knows what you mean.
