MCO Traffic During The Holidays

Mon Nov 27, 2006 3:31 am

A few quick questions for those familiar with Orlando Int'l (MCO). My parents are going to be flying MCO-DTW on 12/24 in the evening. They got a great deal on WN, so they are going to drive over from St. Petersburg for the nonstop Southwest flight. I am advising them to leave especially early in case security lines are bad. I have heard that the east security checkpoint at MCO can get bad. I recently flew MCO-ATL on DL and breezed through in 10 minutes, but I understand it can get delayed (especially the east checkpoint). Since MCO is especially prone to bottlenecks for tourist traffic, I am thinking that security lines may not be too bad since a lot of tourists would not be traveling on Christmas eve. Does anyone have experience with traveling through MCO this time of year?

Also, is parking prone to problems at MCO during the holidays? I am thinking they should be able to park in one of the remote lots, but I am not sure if they fill up really bad during the holidays.

I live in MCO and that time of year can be real tricky however by 12/24 eve it should be dying down...The remote lots also fill up during that week so I would advise them to leave early. Also, as for security that too can be hit or miss I would imagine that it wont be that bad as again its 12.24 eve and most everyone has gone off by then... Good luck and best advise is to leave early!

As Crownvic said...leave early...

However it all depends on what time your flight leaves.....

Typically 7-11 am is HORRIBLE at MCO...regardless of the security checkpoint

then usually from 8:30 - 10:45 is horrible....Delta brings in heavy metal from Atlanta, and the european carriers like to get out around then as well.

Usually however, as long as you get to your parking place a good 2 hours before your flight departs you're guaranteed to make your flight....  Smile . MCO has been constantly praised for it's terminal planning and construction, short walks to and from airplanes, and the fact that it takes no more than 5 minutes to get from the security checkpoint to your airside concourse.
God is good, all the time. All the time, God is good.

Actually 3 hours prior is more reasonable. 2 hours is really pushing it.

Yes. The remote lots fill up quite fast. I flew out last Wednesday for Thanksgiving, and only the Red lot was open, and I had to park on the side of the road in it, as even the grass had no more room for cars within the lot fence! I would think that your parents may run into an issue here, and to be at the airport at least 3 hours before their flight. I was there 2 1/2 hours beforehand, at 3pm (non-peak times), and the check-in lines and security lines were long. I got to my gate about 20 minutes prior to boarding.

Agreed, thats why I fly out at the morning instead of evening. I flew DL to LAS and found that secruity is a breeze at that point leading to A & B east gates. I normaly use B west gates.

All good info..thanks! I will urge my parents to leave very early and make sure they check to make sure the airport lots have available spaces (I would imagine their is a number they could call, right?)

The last time I was at MCO, I was flying back to ATL from a friend's wedding with a few of my friends from ATL. We got to the airport really early, about two hours before our 7:45 pm flight on a Sunday evening. Security was not bad at all...really short line. When we got to the Delta airside, we decided to get something to eat. My friends were not impressed with the selection of places to eat at the airside, I suggested that we try the other east airside gates (100-129) since that was inside security (really because it gave us an excuse to kill time and I had not seen that airside yet). When we arrived back in the terminal and exited the train, the airport personnel directed us off the train and into the terminal and had roped off the pass through to get to the other shuttle..they would not allow us through and pointed at us to exit. We wound up going to eat at the Main Terminal Food Court, but I was somewhat nervous about the line growing longer while were eating. In the end it wasn't bad, but I didn't try to get out to the other gates. When were getting ready to board the shuttle back to Gates 60-99, I noticed they had removed the barrier and when the same folks that directed us out saw us they started to laugh...somewhat irritating! I thought it was perfectly legal to transfer between the east airsides without having to exit the secured area!
